I'd like any info. if possible om the above, my GG Grandmother. My records indicate she was from Castlebar, Co.Mayo, She emigrated to Australia aboard "Panama" in 1850. She was born c 1834, both her parents Patrick & Catherine were deceased.
Shemnarried Robert Turner in Jamberoo NSW in 1854, had 9 children & died 1885.
Other than the shipping record, I have no information of her family & life before her emigrating. If anyone can pass on any info. I'd be very greatful.
Thank you,
Peter Stroud-Watts.

Catherine was part of the orphan girls assisted emigration scheme; girls were taken from workhouses in Ireland and sent to Australia. Catherine would have been in the Castlebar workhouse; you might google to see if the records exist.
Here's some info about the Mayo girls, just in case you have not seen it: http://mayoorphangirls.weebly.com/commemoration.html
I hope this is helpful.

Peter:
Baptismal records for Aglish (Castlebar) RC parish start in 1838 but marriages start in 1824. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was a January 30 1837 marriage in Aglish/Castlebar for a Patrick Needham and a Catherine Faden. The date may be a little late but possibly this record is for the parents of Catherine. I did not find any baptismal records for this couple in Aglish/Castlebar.

Hi Roger,
Thanks very much for your reply. This looks like it could relate to Catherine's parents,, I don't subscribe to Roots, so how would I be able to track down a opy of this ? I have absolutely no info. prior to her boarding the Panama to emigrate.
I would love to be able to link her withher family. Did she have siblings, who were her grandparents etc.?
Cheers,
Peter Stroud-Watts.

Here is the link to the Castlebar parish register for the 19th century up to 1880 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1039
I tried to find the entry for the Needham/Faden marriage and it is likely on the page at the next link but the right hand side page is very faint. The Roots Ireland transcribers had the actual register to review so they saw the record.

Hi Roger,
I've looked through the attachmwnta & can't locate anytghing for Patrick & Catherine, possibly because of the poor legibility. Interestingly I did find the following, it may be relevant, or maybe just wishful thinking on my part.
page 41 of the microfilm (with #80 in column) left side page, to my eye looks like "Jun 22, John Needam ? to Mary McNulty. Present Patrick & Kathie Needam? " I think the year may be 1834.
Looking back through my records, I have Catherine marrying here in Australia 1854, birth certificate of one of her sons born 13/5/1860, shows her age as 26. Her death certificate states she died 3/9/1885 at age 57. So, she was born either 1834 or 1828 according to these 2 records.
Therefore I think that the marriage record for 1837 may not be correct, unless Catherine was born out of wedlock ?
Can you please let me know what would be the best way of obtaining ( or trying to obtain) records for Castlebar workhouse & also more info on her selection for emigratopn to Australia under the scheme in place at the time ?
Thank you,
Peter Strou-Watts.
PS.. Bridget was certainly a popular name at the time :)

Peter,
There is a very good group on Facebook called Mayo Genealogy Group. You can find them here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/277362412340865
I'd suggest popping in there as there are many volunteers there, whose knowledge is focused on Mayo, that might be able to help.
I will also forward your query to them too.
