We have ancestors, Patrick Golden married to Mary Riordan in Kilnamartyra, Diocese of Cloyne, on 26 May 1805. Also, Daniel Golden married to Catherine Connell,in the same Parish, same Diocese, on 26 May 1805, and their son, John Golden, baptized in the same Parish and Diocese on 20 Jun 1827. I am trying to determine what might be the actual Church that these ceremonies took place in. I have found Saint Lachtain's, Saint Abina's, and Reidh na nDoiri in this area. . We are planning a trip to Ireland in September 2021 and we are hoping to vist the Church.

I would greatly appreciate any leads and guidance.

Thanks always for all the great help you give us on the site.

Thanks,

Greg Thornton

  • Greg:

The RC church for Cill na Martra would be St. Lachtain's. From the picture, the current church building was built much later than 1827. You may want to e-mail the parish to see if the church building from 1827 is still standing.

  • Thank you, Roger, very much.I had seen the St.Lachtain's site and photo.I did think it is either a newly-built Church, or, at the very least, a renovation.
I will follow-up with an email to the pastor.
    Stay well.

  • I have ancestors that were married and baptized in the Cill na Martra Parish, and found the church, St. Lachtain's. We are visiting in Oct 2023 and were wondering if their is a parish office and cemetery there, that we can visit? Thank you so much,

  • Patti,

Yes, there is an office as part of the Diocese of Cork, where records are kept. There is a cemetery alongside Saint Lachtain.  We were there in Cill na Marta in September 2021. Midday on our time there, the Church was open.

If you'd like further info on our visit there, I'd be happy to provide:

Also, the Ireland Reaching Out has great volunteers. Contact the County Cork and County Kerry volunteer:

All the best in your search.

  • Appearances can be deceiving. It does look very modern. However The church dedicated to Saint Lachtain, Kilnamartyra church according to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, a great source by the way for things like this, notes that was built in 1839. https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/20907005/seipeal-naomh-lachtain-saint-lachtains-catholic-church-ballyvoge-cill-na-martra-kilnamartyra-cork

Set on an elevated site in the village of Cill na Martra [Kilnamartyra], this fine church creates a strong visual impact. The building's design, of entrance bell tower attached to the church hall, is of form which is more commonly associated with Church of Ireland churches. The interior of the building retains an impressive marble reredos which draws on the Classical style, seen in the Ionic columns and pediment. The skill exhibited in this work along with the painted crucifixion scene and the ornate frieze add artistic value to the church.
