I am looking for info re Charles McManus and his ancestors. I understand he was born in Loughinisland on or about 19 Sep 1819 and his mother was Margaret Kelly maybe b. May 1800 in Loughinisland. Charles emigrated to MIssouri, USA and died there. I suspect his father was Patrick McManus b. Nov 1795 in Magheralin - son of Henry McManus b 1765 in Magheralin - son of Michael McManus b 1730 in Magheralin. Any related info on any of his ancestors would be helpful - even just confirmation of guesses.

Charles is my second great grandfather on my maternal side.

  • Don,

There is a baptism in Loughinisland RC records for Charles McManus on 19th Sept 1819.  It names the father as Pat. The sponsors were difficult to make out with certainty, but look like Hugh Rogan and Aug Savage. The mother’s name was not recorded. The priest’s fee was 1/1 (one shilling and one penny) which was at the lower end of the charges, and indicates the family were fairly poor.

You could go through those records looking for siblings and perhaps the parents death. Not many RC parishes kept death records but Loughinisland did, so that gives you some extra possibilities.

The records start in 1805 so you probably won’t find the parents births or marriage.

There is no other identifying information, nor details of where they lived, so it’s very difficult to say with certaintly whether this is your family.

  • Thanks Elwyn! I really appreciate the help. I find early records in Ireland to be a real challenge.
