Looking for information on the Charles Reeves who appears on Griffiths Valuation in St Iberius parish, Main Street south, No 67,  house, office and yard from Charles Jacob valued L57 pa.  Also on Custom-house Quay, No 2, stores, kiln and yard from John E Redmond, value L46 pa.  I am trying to determine if this is the father of Charles Stephen Reeves, born Enniscorthy 29 May 1836, and his brother Richard Harman Jeffares Reeves, born Enniscorthy c 1836.  Both of these men became successful businessmen and politicians in New Zealand.  It is recorded that they were educated at Tarvin Hall in Cheshire, England and then worked in their father's shipping business in Liverpool before emigrating to the Australia and then on to New Zealand.  "Chafrles Stephen Reeves" also appears in Griifths Valuation for Enniscorthy as the landlord for a couple of properties inMarket Street, so seems likely to be the same man.  I am hoping his business interests might have made him somewhat notable in the community at the time.  I am part of a team from Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin that is making a documentary about early settlers to our region with a focus on their homeplaces as well as their colonial careers.  Charles Stephen Reeves (junior?) is one of our subjects so we are trying to establish a location in Co Wexford to use as a backdrop to discuss his origins.  Any help with information about his father's business interests in Wexford or Enniscorthy would be much appreciated.

  • Do you know what religious denomination this Reeves family were ?

I dont see a Catholic baptism record for Charles jnr. in any of the Enniscorthy baptism registers covering 1836. If the family were not Catholic, e.g. Church of Ireland, then the search will be more difficult as not as many of these are currently available online.

I had a look at Griffith's Primary Valuation and see that both the Charles S. Reeves entries show him as Lessor, so not occupying either of the properties - so certainly possible that these Wexford town and Enniscorthy Charles are one and the same.

For ref. the valuation for St. Mary's Enniscorthy is dated September 1853, and the and the date for St. Iberius Wexford town is shown as May the same year.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Definitely not Catholic and I think more likely Church of Ireland than anything else.
