I am hoping some one out there in Co Westmeath might be able to assist with any information on my Great Aunt and Uncle - Bridget Cheevers and her brother Thomas Cheevers!
Their parents were William Cheevers and Bridget Cheevers ( Née Cooke ). The family lived in Lower Coole, Mayne Parish, Co Westmeath.

( A ) Bridget Cheevers married Thomas Sullivan in 1890. They married in the Catholic Church of Mayne, Co Westmeath. Thomas' father was also named "Thomas Sullivan." Thomas junior's mother was Anne Cox. The Sullivan family and the Cox family were also from Coole, Mayne Parish. I have been able to obtain a copy of Bridget and Thomas' Marriage ( Civil Records ). However neither the Church Records in Mayne Parish have anything  further on this family nor has the CIVIL BIRTH RECORDS for any children. This may be because Bridget and Thomas emigrated!! THAT'S THE PUZZLING QUESTION!!

( B ) Thomas Cheevers, brother of Bridget, died of Tuberculosis in 1859, age 30 years.  I have been able to locate his Birth record in the Church Register of Mayne and his Death  record from Civil Records. What I found interesting in his Death record is that it states "MARRIED," but there is NO record of his marriage in the Civil Records Register of the Irish Republic. Perhaps he emigrated for some years, but returned to Ireland when he became ill. There is little else known of him.
Their brother William married Mary Gurren also in Mayne Parish. William died in 1938. His wife Mary died in 1942. They had no children

I would be most grateful for any information on the above family please.

  • Marie, a Thomas Cheevers married a Bridget Fagen in Castlepollard in 1858 (August 24th) this is prior to civil records for all whihc commenced in 1864. The only other info on the transcription is the witnesses were Thomas Lynch and Mrs Kearney. Castlepollard is the adjacent parish to Mayne and she was probably from there.

There was a child Marcella Chambers born to thsi couple. There is no date recorded but two dates given in that year. 11th May and 11th Nov. 1859.

Notice another interesting birth of a Catherine Cheevers to John Cheevers and Maria Fagan in Castlepollard, witnesses Catherine and Thomas Dermody.

Also see an Anne Cheevers born to a William Cheevers and Bridget Coake in Coole in 1856, that is as transcribed. THe witnesses are Thomas Clonan (man of that name just elected to our senate)  and Elizabeth McEvoy. With a mother transcribed as Coal there is an Elizabeth born in 1855 also in Coole but did not see others plus or mins 10 years from 1850.

    Good Luck

  • Dear Pat,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my email. That’s so very good of you. Much appreciated!
When I read your information re - Thomas Cheevers, my Great Uncle and saw “ died in 1858,” it was only then that I noticed that I had made a mistake re - the Date of his Death. Thomas died in 1898 NOT 1858 ( he was actually born in 1858 ). Therefore the follow - up information that you kindly passed on to me about him will NOT apply to him. Thank you just the same Pat.
With regard to a Catherine Cheevers born to John Cheevers and Maria Fagan, I think that they were cousins of the above family. They lived in Finnea, Co Westmeath.
It is a co - incidence that the above family - William Cheevers and Bridget Cheevers ( parents to the above Thomas and his sister Bridget ) also had a daughter named Catherine ( who was actually born in 1868 in Mayne ). And this “Catherine” is actually my Great Grandmother.
William and Bridget Cheevers married in 1854. They got married in Castlepollard, even though William came from Mayne.
The “ Elizabeth “ and “ Anne “ whom you refer to are also William Cheevers and Bridget Cheevers’ children.
Their first child was Elizabeth, born Sept 1855.
Anne was born in Nov 1856.
Thomas was born in Jan 1859.
Then there was a Martha and Mary - Anne followed by Catherine, whom I have already mentioned.
If Thomas was to marry in Ireland, then he should be listed in the CIVIL MARRIAGE REGISTER in Ireland ( because as you say the CIVIL RECORDS started in 1864 ). He must have emigrated for a few years, because his DEATH is recorded in Co Westmeath, Ireland. Hopefully I will get a solution sometime Pat!!!
Thank you for all your dedicated hard work on that RESEARCH for me Pat.
    Kind regards,
    Maire

  • Edited to add

It should read “ THOMAS CHEEVERS WAS BORN IN 1859. HE DIED OF TUBERCULOSIS IN 1889, AGE 30 YEARS.”
