Thomas Walsh & Emily Florence Walsh (nee Godwin) had five children. I have the details of Cathal Emmond Walsh (b1923, d2014).

There are four other children that I would like to find details about they are (possibly) Chrissie, Mary, Margaret (Peggie) & James (Jim) all born between 1912 and 1920 (i believe).

Can anyone provide any information?

Thanks

Didn’t see Margaret/Peggy. Perhaps she was born 1921/22? Those years aren’t on-line at present.

  • Elwyn,

    Many thanks.

I had the Marriage Certificate and the dates of Christina and James - I don't remember where I found them!

I have just tried to find Christina, James and Cathal and get a nil response; 'no records found'. I don't understand that. I even added a wider date range.

I have tried churchrecords and civilrecords but with no success.

    THANKS,

    Bernard

  • Bernard,

Not sure I understand what you mean by a “nil response”. The links I have given you to the irishgenealogy site should take you to Christina & James birth certificates, provided you register with the site. Mary’s birth is also registered there but for some technical reason is not on-line. (It may not be legible or is damaged, is what the site suggests). However the record of the birth exists and if you want a copy you should be able to order it from GRO Roscommon. If you can't find Christina or James birth certificates, let me know and I'll post them here, but normally there's no need for that. Anyone should be able to access them free on the irishgenealogy site.

Cathal’s birth in 1923 is not on-line on the irishgenealogy site (there’s a 100 year cut off for privacy reasons). However the records are available to the public and you can order copies, just you can’t view them on-line.

You can order a research copy (photocopy) of civil certificates from GRO Roscommon for €5 (euros). https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You can e-mail your order to them and they will e-mail the certificate back to you.

  • Elwyn,

    Thank you for the information.

The 'nil response' / 'no records found' is when I put a search in. The links work as you would expect.

Cathal's exact DOB seems a mystery but my sister-in-law is coming to us for Christmas tomorrow and I will ask her for the actual date in Decemeber of her Father!

[With Cathal's siblings there seems to be a void in recollection! Cathal's wife is still alive Mary Doloris (Maura) O'Loughlin b 1925 and her memory isn't what it was. Maura could have been born Loughlin and the O' added at a later date! I believe in the most part I have quite a lot of information]

I will now try to make some progress on whether Christina, Mary, Jim and Peggie were married and when they died. Not easy without collaborating evidence.

---------------------- New ----------- different leg of ancestors!

I have my maternal great grand parents Thomas Murren & Elizabeth Riley and their parents. Thomas' father Daniel Murran (from the wedding certificate St Joseph's, Nelson, Lancashire 13/11/1886) and Matthew Riley. (I believe Ellen Hughes was Matthew Riley's wife).

On the wedding certificate (attached) the witnesses are Martin Walsh and Mary Riley. I believe they later married (in UK) Mary being the bride's sister. All of the families (Murren/Murran, Riley & Walsh) appear to originate from Sligo (mainly according to UK Census

Out of interest ... I had previously found Thomas Walsh's death registration (attached)

The address of the Thomas Walsh in the death registration is 10 Florence St which matches the address for James Oliver Walsh Birth Certificate.

It is interesting to see he was 'accidentally struck by a motor bus.

Also - I won't bother you again with 'stuff' I have found but Emily Godwin was born at Fort Carlisle in Cork 01/12/1885m with her father being a Sergeant in the 1st Kings Royal Rifles. Emily's mother is shown as Maria Godwin (nee Bagot).

I Have Maria Bagot b 1862 in Tipperary. Would Tipperary and/or Cork been covered by the King's Royal Rifles at that time? As part of Kings County and Queens County?

I also have her father as Laurence Bagot b1807 but this may not be valid and I have not found a mother.

    Thanks

  • It should be fairly straightforward to get Cathal’s birth certificate if you want. Just we don't have on-line access to birth records within the past 100 years. You need to order his birth certificate from GRO Roscommon.

My knowledge of British military maters is pretty limited. (There are genealogical boards that specialise in military genealogy). But my understanding is that regiments were moved around fairly regularly. There’s usually a regimental diary that says where they were posted at any given time.  Here’s what wikipedia says about the Kings Royal Rifles.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Royal_Rifle_Corps

Kings County is now Offaly and Queens County is Laois, but the borders haven’t ever moved over the years, so far as I am aware. Tipperary & Cork were always separate counties.

I think the regimental diaries plus most surviving military service records are held at the National Archives in Kew, outside London. Might be worth a visit.
