Hello

I am researching my Murphy family, who I believe came from Kilcommon. I found this record and cannot fathom what the place of residence is. (entry 298 for Dinnes Murphy-Zip/Lip/fip?) I have looked at the list of townlands, but can only guess it is an abbreviation for something. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Kind regards

Karen.

  • Looks like Tip, or Tipo - the same on the baptism at Kilmore Erris RC parish (second last entry of left page), the civil parish is Kilmore (Erris Barony), no townlands that start with Tip... probably a local placename. 'Tip' has an entry on the placename database, it's described as a population centre, i.e. a village - see Logainm.ie - Tip

I dont see any sign of the village on the historic OS maps, although part of the later map is missing from the OS system.

  • see attached map - this shows the approximate area indicated by the placename database and a possibly location of the former village of 'Tip', it's located in Drumreagh townland.

The maps are from the Ordnance Survey of Ireland historic map collection on GeoHive, the first is dated about 1840, and the second about 1900 - the village is not labelled but you can see that there's a larger collection of buildings on the older map..

    Hi Shane

Thanks so much for your reply

By accident, I found this on a google map while searching for Atticonaun ( Please see attached screenshot). This makes sense as I have been trying to find the Murphy's in the Belmullet area-I have DNA matches to other Murphy's who came from Derrycorrib and I suspect that my McLeans were from Bunnahowen.

Its very frustrating because there are no readily available records prior to 1864 when the civil registration act came in to confirm the existence of so many ancestors. I wonder just how many records are in the Archives in Dublin? I am planning a trip to Ireland in the next few years and would love to pay a visit there to see what is available.

Many thanks again and best regards

    Karen.
