In the 1911 census, there were three Clancy family members, Patrick age 28, Bridget age 21, and Michael age 19, living in Ardataggle, OBriensbridge, Co. Clare.

My great-great-grandmother was Mary "Molly" Clancy from Ballynevin, O'Briensbridge, Co. Clare, who was baptised in 1835.  Her parents were Denis Clancy and Catherine Connell.   Mary came to the Albany, New York area where she married Thomas Winters.  They resided in Troy, N.Y.   Mary and Thomas had six children.  Descendants of their children still live in the Troy, N.Y. area today.

As Tara explained in her post, there are descendants of Mary's siblings in both Australia and various parts of the U.S. today.

I'm curious as to whether the Clancy family memebers who were living in Ardataggle in 1911 might have been cousins of Mary and her siblings Denis, Patrick, Michael and, possibly, James.  I'm also curious as to whether there are Clancy family members in the O'Briensbridge area today who might have information regarding our family history and, if possible, how I might contact them.

Are you able to provide any assistance with this?

Thank you!

  • Hi, You might want to send an email to the Clare Champion at https://clarechampion.ie asking if there are living relatives in the Obriensbridge area.

I took a look at the 1911 census showing the three Clancy siblings--and their cousin, Bridget Slattery.  Have you found the family in the 1901 census? If the parents were alive then,  you would have their names and could then research further back.

    I hope this helps.

  • Joan:

I looked for marriage records for Patrick, Michael and Bridget from the 1911 census. The only lead I located was for a Patrick Clancy marriage in 1917 to a Bridget Minahan. See third record

The record shows that this Patrick Clancy was from Obriensbridge and his deceased father was Michael Clancy. Since the marriage took place in Limerick, Patrick likely just listed the larger town from his area rather than Ardataggle.

I also checked the online Irish phone book but there were no Clancy records in the Obriensbridge area. This directory is only for land lines and does not include cell phones.

  • Patricia,

Thank you.  I searched the 1901 census and didn't find any Clancy or Clancey family members in O'Briensbridge.

  • Roger,

Thank you.  I suspect that the marriage record is for the same Patrick Clancy.
