  • A small part of the 1851 census of Ireland has survived and includes Larne. This was the only James Clements I could find. He was of about the right age.

He had married Margaret McConnell at Larne Non Subscribing Presbyterian church on 27.1.1849. He was a sailor from Larne and his father was John Clements, a labourer. So probably not your family.

Statutory birth registration only began in 1864 in Ireland. Prior to that you need to rely on church records. You haven’t said what denomination the Clements family were but if Presbyterian then Larne 1st Presbyterian has records from 1824 onwards and the Non Subscribing Presbyterian church (sometimes also known as Unitarian) has records from 1729 (with some gaps). I don't think either set of records is on-line anywhere. There are copies of both in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast but a personal visit is required to view them.

I searched deaths in the Larne area 1864 – 1901. I found an Agnes Clements who died 11.12.1892 at Ballysnod, Larne. She was a farmers widow.

No other Agnes and no Hugh in that period. Interestingly, according to Griffiths Valuation (1861) there were no Clements households in Ballysnod but there was an Andrew Snoddy living there. He had plot 9 which was a 1 acre holding. He was replaced in 1870 by someone named David Jenkin. He may have moved elsewhere in the townland because I see a death on 11.12.1892 for Andrew Snoddy of Browndod. He was a farmer and a widower, aged 90. The informant was his daughter Maggie. This looks to be her in 1901:

Ballysnod is just on the outskirts of Larne town. It could be where your Clements & Snoddy families originate. You would need to go through the church records to find out.
