I am looking for my ancestors - the Colemans and the Courtneys (my family name is Kearney).  No idea of region of Ireland.  Both families migrated to Australia mid to late 1800s, most probably to Western Australia.  Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

  • Hello Gabby,

In order to start any king of search I would need a bit more information.  What are the first and surnames of the people you are trying to find.  Any idea of parents names?  About what dates are you talking about?  thousands of ships travelled over that ocean between  mid to late 1800's.

It's impossible to just start a search here with so little to go on.  You will have to glean as much information as you possibly can over there before we can help you here.  Start by making your family tree.  Get birth and marriage certificates for your parents, grandparents and as far back as you can go. Follow the Colemans and the Courtneys back through the generations. Australia has a wonderful repository of records so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

You need to look at birth death and marriage records, and also migration records.

It really is detective work and is so interesting when you get into it.  As soon as you know who you are looking for please let me know and I'll do my best to help in finishing your story from this side.

Best of luck in your search,

    regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi,

What else do you know about the Colemans and Courtney's , do you have first names or dates maybe, anything that could help us with the search.

I can see a lot of passenger records to Australia  for the Courtney's but we will need a first name.

The surname Coleman is very common in Ireland

  • Hi Anne,

Thanks for the reply.  I have started the family tree (Ancestry.com) but records peter out for the Colemans and Courtneys.  Possible first names John and Mary (Courtney).  I know these are very common.  It is also possible one of their son's was Frederick Courtney born in Lisburn Antrim on 8/1/1893.  He left for Gallipoli from Fremantle Western Australia in November 1914 but died on the boat.  I think he had a brother Jack (presumably John) and a sister Mary who went on to marry John Coleman. They had several children including my grandmother Ellen Mary Coleman who married my grandfather Michael Kearney.  I hope this will help you - I know it isn't much!  Gabbie
