Hi As I was looking through questions and replies I noticed the name Donnie O'Sullivan who helps out on the enquiries. My sister put her DNA on ancestry and we have a close connection to Donnie O'Sullivan through sharing great great grandparents Thomas Coll and Margaret Ryan. Is this the same Donnie O'Sullivan? If it is brilliant! AM

  • Hello

My great great grandparents are also Thomas Coll and Margaret Ryan.  Their daughter Bridget Coll is my great grandmother.

  • Hi Elaine

Sorry I was just checking my replies. Bridget Coll is my great grandmother too. So what grandfather or grandmother do you have? Also are you related to a Charles Gilbert through Margaret Halpin marrying Thomas O'Brien? Would love to know your connection. AM

  • Hello

My grandparents are Michael Halpin and Ellen Browne.  I believe Charles Gilbert was married to Margaret O'Brien, daughter of Margaret Halpin and Thomas O'Brien.  I have done quite a bit of research on the Halpins/Colls if you are interested.  My email is elainehalpin@yahoo.com

Look forward to hearing back from you

  • I am the Donie O Sullivan above and I have hit a brick wall in identifying my great grandmother ,Catherine Coll born to Thomas Coll and Margaret Ryan in about 1867.They had Marie born in 1853 and Bridget in 1856 but no baptism for Catherine but her marriage, family etc are available so where did she come from.It is entirely possible her registration was not recorded. It is nice to know that there is a solid connection to Thomas coll and Margaret Ryan that must come from Thomas Coll. Give me the name of your sister and I can then see her on my dna list. This may be a significant breakthrough for me as i had all sorts of notions about illegitimacy, fosterage etc. my ancestors always maintained they were the same Colls as Devaleras mother catherine Coll and during the 2nd world war my grandfather had 2 lorries and often wrote to Devalera for fuel vouchers etc to keep the lorries on the road I had almost abandoned my family tree as I had exhausted all avenues and by accident I hit on this thread looking forward to hearing from you Regards Donie

  • Hi Donie

As far as I know the Colls were around Bruree for years and certainly all the 1800's, Lizzy Coll's mother would have been born before the Famine and her husband was always referred to as the ''old Dean Coll ' and like Dev he was very tall and had a problem with his eyesight and lived up the road from where the cottage is today.

  • Hello, Colls.Halpins, Ryans etc.

I looked at the first post above and see the dna connection to Fitzgerald so i would like to know who Fitzgerald is .

I have not found out who my Catherine Coll is but she definitely appears as a sister to Maria and Bridget and that confirms My line leads back to Thomas Coll and Margaret Ryan but no account of Catherine Coll. Catherine's husband was shot dead on the first day of the 1916 Easter rising and she then moved back to Limerick to live with her sister Bridget. If anybody has any info on Catherine I would be delighted to get it .In answer to the question in the first post  ,yest  I am the same Donie o sullivan

    Regards

    Donie
