Good Evening,

I'm wondering if anyone can offer any advice or assistance with searching for my ancestors.

I have found details relating to the man I believe to be my 3rd great grandfather, Michael Comer being baptised in 1835 with his parents showing as Martin Comber & Mary Nolan. It's slightly confusing as the baptism record is showing as Clonfert, New Inn which my uncle believes is in Galway!

From details available on the census in England it seems to indicate that he was born in 1828 & he states his place of birth as Sligo.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Gary Comer

  • Gary:

I looked at the subscription site Roots Ireland and there are three 1835 baptismal records in Co. Galway for a Michael Comer/Comber including the one listed in your message. There are also other Michael Comer/Comber baptismal records in the 1830s in Galway and also Co. Mayo but no Sligo records.

From looking at Griffiths Valuation data from the mid-1850s, Comer and Comber were mainly a Galway/Mayo and the surname was very rare in Co. Sligo.

I can't tell from your message whether you already knew that Michael's parents were Martin Comer and Mary Nolan or you just located the record and were hoping it was for your ancestor? Can you clarify? Thanks!

  • Gary,

New Inn is in the Diocese of Clonfert in County Galway. Bullaun is a village in the parish of New Inn and the Bullaun records are under New Inn. It seems that your uncle was right!

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi Roger,

    Thank you for your response.

I have a written record that shows Martin & Bridget as Michael's parents with a baptism in 1835 Clonfert, New inn.
