My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Madden was born in Ireland in 1837 in County Galway (possibly Balinasloe). She married my GGGF John in 1854 and left for Australia in the same year. I can find Mary on shipping records arriving in Melbourne.
John is a mystery. He was known as John McClare. McClare does not seem to be the surname John had when he was born or arrived in Australia with. If his death cert is to be believed, John's father was Patrick and his mother was Judith Larkin.
John may have been a Burke/Bourke. Mary's headstone apparently said Mary Burke/Bourke but all the headstones in the church yard were she is buried were removed many years ago.
I will be in Galway in September and I am not sure where to start looking.

I went to the Woodford Heritage Centre as you suggested. I spent an hour with two very helpful ladies and came away with some very useful info.
