Hi, I am a new member, joined today, and would appreciate some help regarding finding a Parish. As far as I can gather, my Lally family came from Belmullett. I understood, perhaps wrongly, that Belmullet is in the Civil Parish of Kilcommon, in the Barony of Erris in the County of Mayo in the Province of Connacht. Also that Belmullet is a Townland in the electoral division of Belmullet. Perhaps this information is outdated? Neither Belmullet or Kilcommon is on the list of Parishes. I am asking because my gt-gt-grandmother, Catherine Lally, together with her mother Ann, sisters Ellen and Sarah are on the 1851 England, Wales and Scotland Census living in Liverpool. They are living with Thomas and Bridget Murphy. Thomas and Bridget Murphy were married in 1844 in Belmullet. My understnding is a marriage usually took place in the bride' s parish. Therefore I am assuming the Lally family were living in Belmullet. Catherine Lally married Thomas Burke in Liverpool 1853. On their marriage certificate her father's name is James Lally. I have searched for years for a death of James Lally with no luck. I am thinking he might have died in the Famine. Also, I haven't been able to find marriage details of Ann and James Lally. Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated. PS - I don't know how to do paragraphs on this message board. Thanks. Marg

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. Belmullet is a coastal town in the barony of Erris (County Mayo). You are correct, It is in the civil parish of Kilcommon (Erris). Feel free to join your parish here. There are 35 ancestors added to that civil parish, please consider adding your Lally family members.

The Belmullet baptismal records start in 1841 and marriages in 1836. It appears that James Lally and Anne married pre-1836 so a marriage record would not be available. Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. A few RC churches maintained death info pre-1864 but Belmullet parish did not so you will not find any info on the death of James Lally. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0742

Thanks so much for your reply Roger. The more I searched the more I had began to realise the records I wanted didn't exist but hoped I was wrong. Thomas Murphy married Bridget Lally in 1844 in Belmullet so would I be able to find my Lally family on Griffiths Valuation? I have no idea how to go about that and any advice would be very much appreciated. Another question: Some of my Lally family are on the 1851 England, Wales and Scotland census, living in Liverpool. How would they have got to Liverpool? Would they have sailed from Dublin? If so, how would they have got to Dublin from Belmullet and how long would it have taken them? Were there regular sailings? How long would the journey across the Irish Sea have taken? What was the cost of the fare? Apologies for all the questions Roger...but you did say to ask. Many thanks, Marg.

There were 44 Thomas Murphy records on the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Mayo, however, none of the records were for Kilcommon civil parish. So either Thomas Murphy was not leasing land or he had emigrated possibly to England.
They likely emigrated during the Famine period so if they were lucky they got a ride on a horse drawn cart or many walked the entire way to Dublin. It would have taken weeks if they walked. There were frequent sailings to England. I don't know the cost or how long it took by boat.
