Hello!  I just found out today that I am descended from a Aghaloo family.

Elizabeth Conlon born 1841 to William Conlon and Mary McKigney.

She was borh too early for the surviving Parish records it seems, but her brother Felix was baptized in Aghaloo May 13, 1849.  By 1878 Felix and his siblings had immigrated to Connecticut.

Is there any way to discover the marriage date of her parents or more information about when they were married?

Thanks!

Joe

  • Joe,

The marriages for that parish start in 1832, albeit with a gap. Have you searched them? Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church (assuming they didn’t both come from the same parish) so if you don’t find the marriage in Aghaloo records, then you could try all the adjacent parishes. But if there are no records for the year you need, there’s no easy way around that.

Don't expect too much information from the marriage record, even if you do find it. Typically, all the records contain at that time was the couple’s names, the date and their 2 witnesses. No parents names or other information such as you get in later years.

  • My name is Glenn McKenna and I just came across your post from 2019. I have ancestors from Aghaloo and they are similar to yours.  I have an Arthur McKenna (g-great grand father, County Tyrone) marrying a Ann McKigney sometime in the period your having problems with.  Not much luck on my end either.  What I do have is more details of the Conlon’s. One of the children of Arthur McKenna and Ann Mckigney was Elizabeth McKenna (my great grand aunt) who did quite well in New York City.  In short, she left a substantial will that included a lot of my family but also a John McKigney (of Kilmore, Aghaloo, County Tyrone), a Mary McCahey (nee Conlon) and Felix Conlon, both of Norwich, Connecticut.  My research shows the McCahey’s and Felix staying and living out their lives in Connecticut.  A name associated with the McCahey’s is Holland (one of the daughters marries).

I know that this doesn’t help with the date of the marriage but you might have found a cousin.

    Thanks

  • My great great grandmother is Martha Jane McKigney who married William Garrett in 1850 at Ballygramane church in Aghaloo.  I believe her father is John McKigney and they were living in Lismulladown.  I believe she had several siblings.

  • I'm wondering where you have searched the surving parish records?  Where did you find Felix's baptism records?  I have seen a Felix, John, and Thomas McKigney in tithe and land records, but that is all, other than marriage records after 1845.
