My ancestor Patrick CONLON (1793-1870) came to New South Wales as a member of the 50th Regiment in 1833. He arrived with his wife Catherine (nee LOWRY, 1807-1877) and a number of daughters.

His death notice summarizes most of what we know about his ancestry:

"SMH, Friday 4 November 1870
DEATHS
CONLON - October 11, at his residence, No. 52 Parramatta-street, Mr Patrick Conlon, in his 77th year, formerly of H.M.'s 50th Regiment, and a resident of the colony thirty-six years, a native of Thinvara, county Galway, Ireland ; he was deservedly respected by all who knew him."

His death certificate and other documents confirm this was Kinvara. Catherine married Patrick at 17 (abt 1824) according to her death certificate.

Patrick's  death certificate states that his parents were Malachi Conlon, a stonemason, and Mary O'BRIEN. The were obviously from the Kinvara district, and married before 1793.

Does anyone have any information on this family? Are there any records of a Malachi CONLON (and variations) in Kinvarra in the late 1700s or early 1800s?

thanks,

matt

  • Hi Matt,

I would suggest you check the Uk National Archives for informatiojn about his time in the army.

The Roman Catholic church records for the parish of Kinvara start from 1831 for baptismal and marriage records.  This is too late for you. The civil records do not start until 1864 - also too late!

There is a list of parishioners from 1834 at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 2442. The website Celtic Cousins may have this also.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
