Regarding  Coolfin,  Portumna,  Galway

I am looking for information  on the Conry/ Conroy and Martin/ Martyn  Families in Coolfin.

I have learned that there are a lot of Conry / Conroys still in  Coolfin.  I have learned that it is a small townland that you could go right passed it and not even realize it.

Also there are Martins/ Martyns in Coolfin .

Patrick Conry/ Conroy  born  abt 1832/ 1833 died 1880 in Coolfin  . His wife Ann Martin/ Martyn abt 1838-1840  . Her parents are James Martin and Mary Killeen.
Patrick and Ann had 8 children. All were born in Coolfin.
Coolfin, Portumna, Galway, Ballynakill (Leitrim barony)Ireland

Mary Ann 1860
Bridget 1864
John 1866
Michael 1868
Patrick 1871
Thomas 1874
James 1877
Francis ( Frank) 1879

I have located all the childrens' baptism records except Mary Ann's as the records do not start until 1864 online.

Ann and all the children immigrated  to America  after the death of Patrick, around 1882-1884.

I did locate Patrick's death  record .

I am looking for  the following:

1. Patrick Conry and Ann Martin's marriage record.

I am assuming they possibly married in the same parish as the birth of the children  around 1857-1859.

I do know that the marriage usually takes place in the parish of the bride.

2. The burial place for Patrick Conry/ Conroy. Possibly a photo of his gravestone.

3. The parents of Patrick Conry and any information  on his possible siblings

I have  found 2 possible sets of parents for him based on birth year.  Of course,  I cannot be sure of  either one.  Hoping to find information in the parish  records.

4. Ann Martin's baptism record  and any possible siblings.  Parents  are  James Martin and Mary Killeen

5. I am trying locate the correct parish for these  families....

I know the following  about the parish records.

Coolfin, Portumna, Galway, Ballynakill (Leitrim barony)Ireland

This civil parish corresponds with the following Roman Catholic parish or parishes.
Abbey & Duniry
Woodford
Ballinakill (near Duniry)

Church of Ireland parishes:
This civil parish corresponds with the following Church of Ireland parish.
Ballinakill

The civil parish and the Church of Ireland parish are the same, but, this is not always the case

Any help  would be greatly appreciated.

  •   Coolfin is in the parish of Abbey...Church of the Assumption.  https://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/church/abbey/church-of-the-assumption-ab…; .  (Duniry, its sister church, has its own church a few miles away).  Unfortunately, church records are spotty or non-existent for the time frame in which you're interested.  In NLI, Ballinakill has no marriages but has baptism records from 1839-1853 and 1859-1881 for Duniry, Abbey etc but it's a good idea to check the nearby parishes, Woodford, Leitrim, Tynagh, Killeenadeema.

As for burial records, many people did not have headstones, but Patrick may have been buried in Abbey/Kilnalahan graveyard https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2538275/abbey-graveyard  unless there's a family plot in another cemetery in the area.  See Kilnalahan priory in Google.  Find a grave is currently a work in progress for the graveyard.  Are you familiar with John Gre nham surnames website/Find my Past?  I find it to be a good resource.  Nearby Tynagh parish has Killeens and may be worth checking out.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

  • Roby:

I can't tell who responded to your original message but they are correct in indicating that records would not be available for Patrick and Ann either marriage or baptisms.

The civil parish for Coolfin is Ballynakill (Duniry). FYI. There are four Ballynakill civil parishes in Co. Galway.

Coolfin is 451 acres in size.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation shows a Michael Conry in Coolfin who possibly was the father to Patrick or some other relation.

  • Roger,

Thank you very much for your reply.

A posted the reply to the original post. I received this from another person on another site but wanted to include it in case someone  could check the parish records for me.

I know that the baptism or marriage records for Patrick or Ann are not available on RootsIreland.  However, I am wondering if they would be at the church where they were married?

I thank you for the additional information about Coolfin.  Very small townland

Michael Conry could be his father or a brother.

I did find a Michael Conry  and Margaret Peggy Gorman  for possible  parents for Patrick.

Michael , the father,  would have to have been born about 1810-1814.

If in 1855 ,it is the father, he would be late 40's .

I found a Patrick in Tynagh  and one in Coolfin.

I have not found Ann with her parents yet.

Thank you again for your reply.

  • Roby:

The church would not have any additional records. Many parishes discarded or lost older parish registers.

  • Roger,

I have been able to find this information,
    using DNA matches.

My cousin's Martyn family came from
    Tynaugh and  Coolfin, County Galway.

This is what I do know
    1. Michael Martyn married Mary Rourty.

    2. They had 3 sons that I know of

James, bn abt 1818 eldest son , who married Mary Killeen,  had a daughter, Anne Martin/ Martyn  who married Patrick Conry of Coolfin. Patrick died in 1880 and Anne immigrated to America with her family. ( my cousin's line)

    John bn 1823

Martin  bn 1831 -1891 married Elizabeth Donough . They had 11 children some remained in Ireland . However , many immigrated to America

I know that the Martyns and the Conrys were neighbors both were farmers and lease
their land.  I know that James inherited the land from his father. I know  he was still
    alive in 1856 in Coolfin.
I have heard James died during the 1860's.

Hoping to find possibly more children for
James and Mary Killeen  Martyn  and Michael and Mary Rourty  Martyn

Any information on this Martyn  family
    would be greatly appreciated.

    .

Thank you in advance for your help.
