I am looking for information on James Costello, Killure (possibly Killuremore) Ballinasloe born about 1821 – 1824. He lived most of his adult life in Alloonbaun, Ballymacward running a shebeen and a farm until he died aged 80 years in 1902. He married Ann Bleahen, Kilconnell.
He is recorded in Griffith land valuation records in Ballymacward in 1855. To date, I have not been successful in locating a birth record for James and thus cannot locate the names of his mother and father. I do not know who his siblings were. He may have had a sister married to Hynes over near Castle of Garbally? Perhaps a sister married to Laheen or his mother may have been Laheen? Perhaps, Francis Costello and Thomas Costello were related to him (resident in Killuremore in 1855 according to Griffith Valuation)?
There are Costello names in Killuremore in the census of 1901 and 1911. The names William and Thomas are common names in the Ballymacward Costello’s.
Any information greatly appreciated.
Marie

Dear Marie
Many thanks for you query. I forwarded you message to our volunteers in Killure and Ballymacward. Please see response from Brendan.
This James Costello seems to be a brother of Francis and Thomas Costello as he is buried amongst the Costello family in Killure cemetery . His name on his Headstone reads--Patrick Costello and his wife Mary and their son James Costello who died 1st June 1903 aged 75 years and his wife Anne died 20th Sept.1911 aged 85 years.(this is exact wording) Patrick Costello Ballymacward.(this latter P Costello is obiviously their son) also a Headstone beside them to a Hanoria Kennedy who departed this life on Sept. 29th 1887 aged 33 years. Erected to her memory by her husband John Kennedy. Passaic, New Jersey, USA. (She may be a sister of Patrick Costello Ballymacward, I would like to know as the present Costello,s simply do not know)
I have a marriage of a Thomas Costello to Ann Lynsky March 11th 1832 present- William Lynsky and Patt Costello in our Parish registry (probably the father of James) a Baptism on Aug. 20th 1841 of Catherine Costello Prs. Thomas and Ann Lynsky Sponsers- Francis Costello and Bridget Gilmore. another Bapt. James Costello Prs. Thomas and Ann Lynsky sps.- Thomas and Nelly Costello.
The present Costello family who have the graveplot would love to compare notes on their ancestors.
Paula you can put this email in its entirety on the message board Ps. no record of James;s Baptism on Parish records, or his marriage to Ann Bleahen who was also a parishioner-- bad record keepers.
I hope this is of assistance to you.
Regards
Paula

Dear Brendan/Paula,
Thank you very much for you information. Good to have the connection with Francis and Thomas Costello as this is new information. I was particularly excited to read your wording from the headstone inscription as I only recently discovered that James and Anne had a daughter named Honor born 30 March 1867 ( source: online research). This was the first time I had heard of this name but I did know that he had several daughters. My initial instinct was that the lady mentioned on the headstone is the daughter of James and sister of Patt etc in Ballymacward. However, the dates do not coincide - If she is the child of James Costello and Ann Bleahen, born 30 March 30th March 1867 yet the headstone records her as age 33 in 1887. Also I did some online searching and find that :
- John J. Kennedy and Honore A. Costello had a child– Male child born 3 April 1884 ( mother’s age is 35) . Address is Passaic, Passaic, New Jersey.
- John Kennedy and Honora Costello had a Male child born 10 July 1885. Address is Passaic City, Passaic, New Jersey.
These may not be the same person in both instances or either may not be Killure/Ballymacward Costello. She is too young to be a sister of James, Thomas, Frances etc. yet too old to be a daughter of James? But perhaps it is James daughter as the family were poor at recording correct age, in line with others at that time.
To the best of my knowdedge I can state that the ten children of James and Anne in Ballymacward were(Ann declared 10 births in the 1911 Census):
- Mary Costello( ? ) . Born c. 1860. This daughter may have married Thomas Cunningham. Tullaghaun, Kilkerrin. Had 6 children. One daughter married O’Connor. Two sons, Patrick and John, lived in Costello’s Ballymacward until 1963 and 1966, respectively.
- Patrick Costello.(Patt) Born c. 1860. Never married. Resided in Ballymacward. Died c.1934.
- Bridget Costello. Born c. 1860’s. Never married. Resided in Ballymacward.May be buried in Ballymacward, if not Killure.
- Anne Costello. Born c.1860’s. Married John Murphy, Ballyinrooaun/Ballyinruan near Menlough. No Children.
- Eliza Costello. Born 1864. ?
- Hugh Costello. Born 1865. Married Ms. Donnellan, Clonberne and moved to Salthill. Had 4 (?) children. His last surviving daughter (Teresa?) died in 2006 and was buried in Galway city.
- Honor Costello. Born 1867.
- Michal Costello. Born 1868. Never married. Died c. 1950s.May be buried in Ballymacward, if not in Killure graveyard.
- Theresa Costello. Born 1871. Married to John D. Hanlon, Annagh. Ballymacward. Had 4 (?)children. Last child died 2000.
Note: One of the girls above married Stankard from Aughrim (Newcastle?) and had one son Edward. She died pre-1900.
- William Costello. Born c. 1864. Married Delia Healy from Coorallea, Hillsbrook/Kilererin. Resided in Ardnaglug (Moore Parish) - 4 miles from Ballinasloe. Died in 1927. Buried Kilbegley, Moore. Had 8 children. Their names were (all deceased):
May (Fallon)(Dunmore, Galway). Married - 3 children.
James (aka Gerard) Costello.(Winnipeg, Canada);Married-1 Child.
Nora (Paulinson). Bloomingsdale,New Jersey; Married-No children.
Thomas Costello. Ardnaglug. Married-No children
Patrick Costello. 2 Hawkes Road, Mitcham, Surrey. Married two girls.
Martin Costello. Astoria, New York. Married – 2 children.
William Costello. Ardnaglug. Married - 3 children.
Michael Costello. Straffan. Married – No children.
Last surviving child, Michael Costello, Straffan. Co.Kildare, died April 2004. William (Bob) Costello lived in Ardnaglug until his death in 1986. Bob’s three children still live in Ardnaglug. I am Bob’s daughter.
I hope to go to Killure graveyard any day soon. You mentioned that some present day Costello’s Killure are about - It would be great to meet.
Kind regards,
Marie

Hello,
I was doing some additional geanealogy research and I came across this website on the Costello Family. I recognized some of the names posted here and I was hoping there might be some sort of connection.
My Great-Grandmother is Bridget " Delia " Costello from Fohenagh/Caltra/Galway area. We believe she was born on May 24, 1876 or possibly 1877?
She was raised on a farm in Ireland. She had a job lined up as a servant in New Jersey and she married a John Aloysius Mahon - Great Grandfather.
She immigrated to the USA from Ireland April 4, 1896 with a friend named Regan on a ship called "Lucania" which departed from the Port of Queenstown - now called Cobh.
From my research I believe her siblings were: Michael, Mary, Ned
- possible sibling Michael Costello born Aug 25, 1867
- possible sibling Ned Costello or Edward- born Jan 8, 1871. Baptism 528 Clonbrock, Galway.
- possibly Mary Costello - Birth Dec 12, 1872 Clonbrock
Parents were: - James Costello and Margaret Kelly-Costello.
** The information may or may not be correct but I thought I would post this just in case you might have any more information.
Thanks
Scott Mahon

I know this post is ten years old but I have started researching my Costello branch and based off of Ancestry DNA matches, and my research from documents in the US, I believe I have connections to James Costello and Margaret Kelly Costello. Apologies in advance for all the information. My direct branch is Patrick Henry Costello born in Ballymacward approximately 1845 to Michael Costello (1822-1888) and Mary Costello nee Dalton. Michael and Mary also had a son Michael W. Costello in 1847 before emigrating to Boston, Massachusetts. There they had several more children, Mary, Thomas, Ellen, and John E. Costello. I believe James and Margaret had a daughter named Winifred A. Costello born around 1861. She came to Boston in 1879. In 1896 she passed away, leaving a detailed Will. In this will, she indicates that Michael W. Costello is her cousin and executor of her will with enough detail to confirm it is the Michael W. Costello that I am related to. In her will, Winifred lists a sister Mrs. Bridget Finnerty of Galway and Mrs. Margaret Monohan of Boston. She then leaves the remainder to her mother Margaret and excludes her brother Michael. If my research is correct, James Costello's father would have been a brother of Michael's named Edward base on the following marriage record. If so, my research suggests Edward married a Celia Finnerty and they both died in Boston, MA. I have one DNA match confirming Michael Costello had a brother Edward who would at least one other child Peter, whose descendent I match with.
Name James Costelloe Gender Male Age 24 Birth Date 1841 Marriage Date 01 Jun 1865 Marriage Place Galway, Clonbrock, Fohenagh, Ireland Father Edward Costelloe Spouse Margaret Kelly I would love to learn more about any Costello connections to the area. I know records are hard to come by in this time period and area of Ireland but I'm hoping for a miracle or possibly more DNA matches to confirm other Costello connections. I have a tree on Ancestry, am on Gedmatch, and can be reached at eas621@gmail.com
Thank you,
Emily Jones
