I am researching Kater Costello who was a witness in the Holycross Murder of Daniel Mara in 1829. A letter in the NAI seeks protection for the two sisters of Kate Costello who have been obliged to flee their homes in Cappa [?Cappawhite, County Tipperary] on account of threats arising from Costello being a crown witness in the Mara case. The sisters may have been Julia and Mary, but I am not certain of this.
Kate Costello gave evidence against her cousins Patrick and John Keogh of Clohane Tipperary.
There is also a document in File of papers relating tol Edward Costello, Limerick, seeking relief and free passage to America, for his own protection, claiming his life is in danger following the service of his sister, Kate Costello as a crown witness in a murder trial in County Tipperary.
I would really appreciate any guidance in my research for this Costello family.
With thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret,
If it's of any help, I am also researching Costello ancestors from Co. Tipperary as my maternal great-grandfather, Edward Gabriel Carmody married a Catherine Costello in around 1860s in Warrnambool Victoria, Australia. They both emigrated to Australia in 1860 on the same ship..
I've noticed there were quite a few Costello families in County Tipperary during my research.
Regards,
Paula

Hello Paula and thank you for the message. To date, I do not have any more information than that originally posted. There may be clues for me in a book about the Holycross murders but it is only available to me in my NSW State Library and due to COVID restrictions I have been unable to have a look at it. If you live in Australia and am interested I can give you details.
Regards
Margaret
