My great grandfather, Hugh Darcy, came to Minnesota in the U.S. about 1850 from Gowly Townland in Kiltubrid Parish of County Leitrim. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Gowly Townland and St. Brigid's church in Drumcong where he probably attended mass. Four generations of my family had planned a trip to Ireland this July and I had hoped to be able to show them Gowly Townland and St. Brigid's church so they could see where our ancestors came from but the trip was cancelled because of Covid 19. I am wondering if there might be someone in the area that I could hire to take a short video of the area with a drone or something so my family could see the area of our ancestors. Any suggestions of how to get this done would be welcome. You can contact me at jimtv@juno.com. Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • Hi Jim, I am looking at old queries and there are a few things, there is a long thread on this site (get back if you cannot find it) on a D'Arcy who fought a the battle of Trafalger in I think 1815 from that area if I remember correctly.

There is a website here https://www.yourleitrimancestors.ie/ and on Facebook there is a private group County Leitrim History and Genealogy and a South Leitirm Gedmatch page if you are into DNA testing.

There was or is an interesting book about the Slack family who lived in Annadale in Kiltubrid, written from the diaries of Lady Slacke in the late 1700s, I had a copy and lent it so cannot remember the name, also on You Tube there are videos of the Cavan Leitirm Narrow guage railway and you can see some of the area.

The local studies section of Leitrim Library would also be of interest.

    Regards

    Pat
