I am looking for any information regarding a Patrick Moloney in Limerick or County Clare in the 1850s and early 1860s who was supposedly involved in some way with the Constabulalry in those areas.  He would have disappeared from Ireland in September 1863 as by then he was onboard the vessel LORD DALHOUSIE to Fremantle, Australia.  He married Johanna Fitzpatrick in Limerick in February 1863 and she also went to Australia.  Have considerable information regarding their time in Australia after 1863, but next to nothing regarding their lives and families in Ireland before then.  Any input appreciated.

  • Hi Steve,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking for Patrick?s RIC record? Excellent personnel records were kept from 1816. These can be found at the UK National Archives here:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/royal-irish-constabulary.htm There are microfilm copies at the National Archives of Ireland, The Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). For each recruit it includes a brief service record, date of marriage and wife's native county, and the name of the individual who recommended him. This is important to identify an exact place of origin, because the recommendations usually came from local clergymen or magistrates who knew the recruit personally. There is a book by Jim Herlihy called, The Royal Irish Constabulary: a complete alphabetical list of officers and men, 1816-1922, 1999. This supplies the Service Number needed to use the Registers quickly and easily.

You can find information regarding the Garda here: http://www.policehistory.com/museum.html

I also recommend that you contact the Clare County Library , they have an excellent Local Studies Collection and may be able to give you some more advice.
