Jeff Fitzsimmons has transcribed records of births and marriages from Killaloe. One of then is John O'Dea to Wenny Hogan, Wenny is recorded as being from Ballycugeran and John from Cragg. My understanding was that Cragg was the township bordering Ballycuggeran (sometimes refered to as Crag or Craglea), yet Jeff has transcribed this as Cragg in Tipperary. Does anyone know why this is? Regards Bill O'Day.

  • Hi Bill:

I will contact Jeff about this and he can reply.  My understanding of the transcriptions are that what was recorded is what was transcribed.  Oftentimes, townland names changed or were referred to in short or local terms.  I am familiar with the townland of Craglea which is close to Ballycuggeran, as you correctly noted.  I'm sure that Jeff will be able to reply.

    Thanks for your message.

    All the best,

    Hi Bill

When I transcribed the Killaloe database, I did have some help but definitely on every row of data. I basically had a map and a compass, calculated kilometres/miles and used that as guide of likely townlands, I never said that the work (see prefare) would not be without error, just a human guess as the original Killaloe priests didn't always indicate townland or county.  If is evident that there is crossovers from Tipperary and other places like Limerick into the Killaloe Registers.

When I first got involved with the Killaloe Registers abt 2011, I spend about $3000 Australian dollars to find information, as no indexes/transcriptions existed back then.

I undertook such a project of transcription is to save other people that burden/grief and to open up the registers to assist others to find useful information, has saved hours of time.

However since I published the Killaloe Registers online back in 2017 your question is first of this nature I have received. I dont mind at all but in turn are you able to assist me through the problem and I am happy to adjust a revised edition to help others.  I can take a little time to recheck, but lets not going to throw the baby out with the bath water.

There is several type of flavours in the Killaloe Database, as the priests indicated:

    Baptism Register

Cragh - Craghera, County Clare, Civil Parish of Killadysert

Crag - Craglea, Killaloe, County Clare

Cragg, Cragg, County Tipperary [my first thought]

Cragg - Craglea, Killaloe, County Clare [yes I agree now Cragg with a double g,  that is a possibility]

Marriage Register (includes same as baptisms above):

    Craggleagh,

    Curagh

However I note Tipperary Records within the Killaloe Register do exist:

See bapt record 5290 Vol2, Microfilm 31, record 5345, ARKINS,

    Also see 1428 Vol1, Microfilm 47, Microfilm 47, record 1417, TATE.

From your opinion Bill, ALL the Cragg is Crag, so does ALL the Cragh = Craghera? and it is possible that some of the entries for Crag/Cragg could be either Craghera or Craglea do you have any knowledge of either of these areas to clarify assist others?

I apologise if this has caused you any inconvenience but let's work together.

    Kind Regards

    Jeff Fitzsimmons

  • Hi Jeff, thank you very much for your response. The information I received on Cragg was provided by Antoinette O'Brien from clareheritage centre in Corofin around 2002. It is only subsequently that I have come across your transcriptions, and obviously reconise that you have attempted to provide more detail in your translation.  The transcriptions are a fantastic resource and I appreciate what you have down. Anrtoinette from the genealogy center obviously made an educated guess that Cragg(Craglea) was the townland because of the proximity to Ballycuggeran. John O'Dea was from Cragg and Wenny  Hogan (Winnifred) was from Ballycuggeran. I have no further evidence to suggest otherwise and that was why I was seeking your thoughts. I tried looking for a contact for you, as I have cited your work in some of my other research on my family tree. Interestingly I have  a Judy Quinlivan and John Nihill as sponsors of my 2nd great grandmother in 1850, a name that you are potentially associated with. I would be happy to look further at your data and see if I can draw any coclusions around the different versions of Crag, although a pattern of proximity in marriages may be the best that I can deduce. I will come back to you on this. My email is billoday@me.com if you nedd to contact me. Regards Bill.
