My grandmother, Ellen Moriarty from the Maherees, married John Crean in the US, having arrived via Ellis Island. John died in 1916 and is buried in Yonkers.

John and Ellen had three children John (junior), Joseph and Mary.

Ellen returned to Ireland and married James Shea (or O'Shea) and had my mother, Ellen O'Shea.they lived in Augchasla.

Ellen Moriarty (Shea) died in Augchasla in 1964.

John (junior) died young in New York, and Joseph died young (about 7 yo) in Deelish. My step aunt, Mary died around 1978 in London without marrying, having spent her life nursing.

I'd like to fill in missing gaps in family history and, in particular, would like information on my maternal grandfather - James Shea (O'Shea) and of Ellen Moriarty

See first record at this link for the 1917 marriage of Ellen Crean and James O'Shea

Was James O'Shea considerably older than Ellen? See 1901 and 1911 census records for a James Shea in Aughacasla North townland in Killiney civil parish. Note on the 1911 census, James is shown as born in America.

What parish is Maherees located? I may have more success with finding a birth record for Ellen if I know the parish.

One of our volunteers, Shane Wilson, let me know that the Maherees was in Killiney parish.

I did find a 1901 census record that could be the correct family. We know that Ellen's father was Patrick and I located this census record in Kilshannig townland which may be the correct family.

    1901 census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Castlegregory/Ki…

The Ellen in the census record was 8. I found her older brother David's birth record in October 1890 and the mother was Catherine Corkery/Corkory. I looked thru the birth records for 1891-1893 with no success in finding Ellen's birth record.

The Castlegregory baptismal records are not online for the years around 1892 so no way to look for church baptismal records.

I did locate the church marriage record. Patrick and Catherine were married March 2 1886 in Castlegregory. Father of Patrick was David and the father of Catherine was Patrick.

    Hi Roger,

Ellen Moriarty's mother was Mary Kenny of Killshannig.

also I understand that Ellen went to the US in 1900 so I think you've got the wrong Ellen

Having Mary Kennys name helps so ignore the prior info.

Last record shows 1864 civil marriage record for Patrick Moriarty and Mary Kenny. Names of fathers shown on record.

Fourth record 1876 birth record for Ellen. Family living in Fahamore  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…
