My Great-grandfather was Thomas Cuddihy born approx 1819. He was married to Margaret Phelan in Newfoundland in 1865. ih his marriage certicate he gave his residence at Ballingarry parish, Gusthmaske?( there are a couple of possible interpretations). He died in Montreal 1884. There are a few possible parentage options, one a Connor Cuddy and Margaret Flannery   in Roscrea ,( a Con Cuddihy later appears in Ballingarry tithe applotments along with an Andrew Cuddihy).Connor and MArgaret also had a Connor a Catherine and a Michael.A Richard Cuddihy was a sponsor at one of Thomas' sons baptism in newfoundland.Richard had been a teacher and had 2 children Michael Anthony and Mary Anne who both died in early adulthood.

Thomas had 2 sons, Richard John Louis , born 1868 , who never married and Thomas Francis 1871.Oner of or both may have been  teaching Brothers in an order but the Christian bros archivist has no record, although they both studied at Christian bros schools.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Margaret phelan may have been connected to the Upperchurch Phelans but there are too many possibilities....

  • Michael, I am looking over old queries and there are a number  ,f Ballinagarry parishes, I assume we are in Tipperaray, for your early queries the records commence too late, see https://registers.nli.ie/ Type in parish name, not an easy search if you wish to find entries as only event, month and year possible and then read often poor writing.

Post 1864 there are civil records on this site but church reocrds are only Cork / Kerry and Dublin. It is free https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Click on civil icon etc

As you have discovered is the choice of people makes proof difficult but if you post agian on the parish site your information you may

    Good Luck
