I’ve hit the brick wall with my Cunningham/O’Brien line. My ggrandmother, Mary Cunningham, (father’s name John on registration) married Daniel O’Brien (father Patrick) on June 5, 1876 in High Street Chapel, Banagher, King’s Co. They had four daughters. The eldest, Mary, born Clonfert, Co. Galway, 1877, married Jim Ryan July 14, 1901, St. Rynagh’s Church, Banagher. I know descendents of their 10 children still live in Clonfert.

Annie O’Brien (my grandmother, born in Clonfert, 1879) married Michael Coolahan in Birr, King’s Co.  in 1899. Her sisters, Kate (b. Brackloon, Co. Galway) and Bridget moved to New York in the early 1900’s and settled there. The O’Brien women and the Cunningham’s (Thomas, and Rose Doolan) of Fadden, King’s Co. were sponsors at various baptisms and marriages in each of their families. I’ve researched that Cunningham family and cannot find a direct connection.

On the 1901 Census, Mary (Cunningham) O’Brien, widow, Mary, Kate and Bridget were living in Banagher, and it was recorded they all were born in Galway.

What I’ve written here is all the information I have on my great-grandparents. When I spoke with Molly Ryan, widow of Dan (son of Mary O’Brien and Jim Ryan) many years ago, she told me she thought Dan’s people came from Eyrecourt.  Is it possible to give me a direction as a starting point? I’ve had no luck finding church records for Clonfert or Eyrecourt

  • Hi Valerie,

The O'Briens were related to  the late Seamus Hynes and also the Ryan family as I understand. Pat Ryan a nephew of the late Dan Ryan has been working on his family tree. I will try and contact him to see if he may have pieced this bit together.

    Regards,

  • Christy - I would love to hear from Pat Ryan. I have some information on the Hynes family and would dearly love to connect the dots. Any help I can get to aid me starting to look for these common names will be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Valerie,

I am Pat Ryan. Mary Bryan was my grandmother and I probably have most of the details you are missing or so I hope. I had just been in contact with Mary Johnston before her early death . I have a copy of all her work and was in the process of filling in the gaps when she became ill. I am slow at this computer stuff but will gladly call you if you wish. The Bryans and Cunninghams were related through the Burke family of Killoran, Clonfert. The Burkes all died out, Eliza being the last and she died in 1970 aged 94. My father Tom Ryan, the youngest of Mary Ryan's (nee bryan) children inherited the Burke farm and this is where I was born in 1951. Now thats a start --  looking forward to hearing from you. My email address is ryancoosan@yahoo.co.uk.

    Pat.

  • I'm tracing the Cunningham family from Fadden, King's Co. I've located William, Henry and John in the Tithe Applotment Books and traced William Cunningham through 1840, when he emigrated to Canada. I would like to share research, learn more about the connection with O'Briens and Ryans and hopefully connect with some existing Cunningham descendants. I'd really appreciate any help. My email address is mccghn191@att.net

We were in Ireland in August 2015 (last summer) and met Pat Ryan and took a tour of the area with Pat. Please contact us at pmflannery@hotmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. Janice
