Hello! 

Thanks so much in advance! I’ve always been interested in my irish roots but even more so since my beloved Irish Angel Mom passed a few years ago. I was only able to get so far on research on my own & was hoping you could help. Her maiden name is Curran.  I only got as far as my Great, great great grandfather John Curran, who emigrated here to the US when he was a boy in 1856. From my research, I believe his parents are James & Mary, born in Ireland. Some family members have told me County Cork.  Below is the info I have. Was hoping you could fill in more about his parents James & Mary, & prior in Ireland.  Thanks so much again!

John Curran 1849-1908

  1. *Birth: Sep 1849, Ireland (County Cork?)
  2. *Immigration year: 1956 (via 1900 census)
  3. *Parents both born in Ireland (via 1900 census)
  4. **1877: Married Annie Catherine Crouch (via Virginia Marriage index)
  5. **John’s parents names are James & Mary (via 1877 Marriage index to Annie C Crouch)
  6. **John was widowed when he married Annie Crouch (via 1877 marriage index)
  7. Children via 1900 census: Mary M., Annie E., John Cleveland, Arthur E.
  8. Death: 7 Apr 1908, Richmond, Va
  9. ** he may have first been married to Susan A. Curran who passed on 1872-10-08 at 25 
    & had a baby with her: Mary Lizzie Curran who passed st 7 weeks, 3 days old who passed on 7-20-1871 (I found news articles  but not sure if this is the same John Curran but the dates & locations seem to match)

    I searched on a couple web sites including the subscription site Roots Ireland for the years 1845-1855 and only found one baptismal record for a John Curran with parents James and Mary. See below. One of the research constraints is that not all churches have records back to 1849 particularly in the western counties such as Mayo, Galway and Donegal.

    I think your next step is trying to find John's mother's maiden name so you can verify if this record is correct ot not.

    You may also want to add John's story to our XO Chronicles and possibly someone will see a connection.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

    Thanks so much for your quick reply!

    I guess I’m going to have to question some of my older aunts & uncles for some info as I don’t cirrentky know her maiden name    

    I did take a DNA test with Ancestry.com   But IT didn’t Lead me to any info past what I already know :(
