Florencee Danaher died about 1930 in Newcastle, West.  He was married in 1874 to Ellen Murphy.  Ellen died about 1907.  Their daughter, Hannah, my grandmothr, came to America in 1912.  I believe she came with a brother, John, and met up with a sister, Kate.

The 1901 Census cites the Danganbeg Dist. and Town/Street of Ballygeel.  I would so appreciate any info about this family, living or deceased.  Thank you, Maureen (Loughlin)  Munn.  P.S.  What does the word "Bally" mean??

I wonder if Hannah was Johanna?

You may want to check the Griffiths Valuation (free at www.askaboutireland.ie/) which has 30+ Dannahers & 11 Danahers in Limerick in the 1850's

  • Dear Col and Margot,

Thank you both for the quick response and valuable information.

Your link has given me a copy of great grandmother, Ellen's, death record.  I'm going to continue searching for her parents; and some missing children.

You also gave me the birth and baptism dates for 7 of their children.  I had names for 10 and in the 1911 Census, widower Florence says they had 13 children, 9 of which were living.  I think one of them, Margret, is actually a niece.  ( in 1901 Margret Failey, age 2, is a niece; in 1911 Madgie, age 13, is a daughter.

The birthdates confirm that Johanna and Hannah (sometimes Hanna) are the same person.  If the family always called her Hannah, I wonder if she even knew her full name.  None of the records I'veseen (immigration, marriage, census, death) use any name but Hannah.  She married Hugh Loughlin in 1917, had 2 children - Hugh, my dad, in 1918 and Helen in 1919.  Hannah contracted TB in about 1924 and died in a TB sanitarium on 13 January 1028.  Dad and his sister were put in foster care from 1924.  Even his father had died by 1933.

My father loved his parents and they certainly instilled a love of all things Irish in his soul.  It is sometimes bittersweet, to learn history and facts about his parents - something he longed to learn.  If only Ancestry.com had existed when he was living.  I visited Ireland twice and never knew my Limerick connections. Now I need to save my pennies and return!!!                                              Thank you again so much, Maureen

  • Dear Maureen,

My Grandmother was Ita Danaher. She also lived in Maiden Street where she raised her 8 children. My Mothers name was Christina Lenihan. Ita married Dennis Lenihan in Newcastle West. My Mum is no longer with us, but she was one of 9 (8 born in Newcastle West 1 the youngest born in London where my Nanny Ita and Grandad Denis moved just before the war). I'm pretty sure my Mum mentioned having an Uncle Florrie and also mentioned an Abina who went to America. We are lucky enough to have photos if you would like to see them.

You can email me at: houseindingle@gmail.com

    Look forward to hearing more.

    Warm regards,

    Julie Conway
