I am one of many Mooneys descended from Daniel Mooney born c1809 in Hall, County Westmeath.  He and his brother Patrick emigrated in the 1830s to Massachusetts. Another relative John Mooney was later in New York City.

My puzzle is whether these brothers are related to the Mooneys that Liam Cox says 'disappeared' from that area.. He wriites:

"This family was located in Maugheramore townland about a mile south of Mount Temple village, rather nearer to Moate that to Athlone. The earliest of the family noted was Cornelius Mooney, who died 7 May 1742 aged 48 years and was buried in Kilcleagh old Castledaly, where his son Francis Mooney erected a monument to his father's memory. Francis was succeeded by Connor Mooney presumably his son. In 1802 at the Mullingar Lent assizes this Connor was named with Christopher Adamson of Bellanalack and Anthony Mcloughlin of Maughermore in a Grand Jury Presentment to make 79 perches of new road between Seeoge and Maughermore (32). In the tithe rental of 1826 for Ballyboughloe (Mount Temple) parish three Mooneys -John, Frances and Martin - were each cessed for tithes on separate holdings in Maughermore townland. They apparently belonged to the family of Connor above. All three made claims to be registered as voters for county Westmeath in 1832 under the regulations introduced that year but none of them was granted registration (33). In Griffith's Valuation (34) complied in 1853 there was no Mooney residing in Maughera more or neighbouring townlands."

There is a Daniel Mooney there in Hall in the 1853 Griffiths, just a couple miles from Maugheramore, but over the county line into Westmeath. Perhaps that is why Mr. Cox missed him.  I am curious whether this Daniel is father to my Daniel from Hall, and whether he is connected to 'John, Francis and Martin" Mooney of Mount Temple.

Any others interested in this puzzle?  Will be traveling through Westmeath early September 2013...

  • Hi Kris

Just came across your post while family searching.

I dont have any info to help solve your puzzle, but my great-great-great-great-grandparents Christopher Adamson and Bridget Keegan had a son Christopher baptised in Kilcleagh in 1837, whose sponsors/godparents were William Adamson & Mary Mooney, perhaps Mary is one of your ancestors.

Both Magheramore and Hall are well within the Westmeath county boundary, and don't border Offaly at all.  Liam Cox was my teacher for a time.

There is a Daniel Moony death recorded in Westmeath in 1854.

    Enjoy your time in Moate.

  • Hi Tom,

    Thank you for writing.

You are of course correct that Hall is not at the Offaly border.  I meant to say Mr. Cox seems not to have looked in the adjoining parish (not adjoining County) for Mooneys in the Griffiths.  Hall is pretty close to Castledaly where Cornelius is buried and to Magheramore where those Mooney brothers were last documented in the 1830s.

Curious about your sourcing for the 1854 Daniel Mooney Westmeath death.  Was it the LDS film of Kilcleagh RC records?

  • Hi Kris,

Apols dont check this this site too often, and it doesnt send me an email to say this thread has a new message like so many other sites, bit of a disappointment that way.

However, the death of Daniel Moony 1854 is to be found on the www.rootsireland.ie site, which is very good once you get the hang of not unnecessarily wasting your credits, though it is a pay service if you want to see a full trancription of a registered BMD.

    Regards,

    Tom
