My research shows Daniel (Donald) McCarthy and Catherine Flannagan had the following children:

1. Patrick McCarthy bap. 19 Mar 1933 Quin, Clare.

2. Mary McCarthy bap. 5 Jul 1835 Quin, Clare.

3. John McCarhty born 1842

4. Daniel McCarthy born 1843

The three males above all emigrated to Australia and all sadly drowned in three separate incidents along the same river.  They are buried together in the Frederickton Cemetery in New South Wales.  Their headstone says that they are natives of County Clare.

Apart from the two baptisms above I haven't been able to track down Daniel or Catherine's marriage nor any other records of them.

So I am looking for anyone else who may have McCarthy or Flannagan ancestors from Quin or nearby.

Cheers

  • Dear Kevin:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  I am a Tulla volunteer with the programme, and I have checked the marriage registers for Tulla, O'Callaghan's Mills for you (which start in 1819 & 1835 respectively).  It seems that they most likely married in the nearby area, but they probably married before the registers began.  This is often the case.

I have looked at the baptism records that you ahve listed and I see that some of the residences were Ballymarkham, Carraroe and Cullane.  Cullane was very close to the Tulla/Kilkishen/Quin border and it is possible that the families (either McCarthy or Flanagan) resided there before marriage.  I also note that there were Flanagans in Moymore townland in Tulla which borders Tulla parish with Clooney/Quin.

I would recommend that you create an Ancestor profile for any or all of the McCarthy children.  You may find that there are others researching the same family names who will be able to add further information.  The Flanagan surname is noted in Clooney parish in the Griffith's Valuation of 1855 in the townland of Ballyvroghan Oughter and Kilgobbin.

If you have not already looked at the Clare Library website, you should definitely do so.

    Kind regards,

  • HI Jane

Thank you so much for coming back to me with all this information. Sometimes the records simply don't exist to take your research back any further. C'est la Vie!

I will follow up on the suggetsion of making some more profiles. Daniel (b 1843) didn't marry but John did marry and have some children.  Unfortunately there is another John McCarthy with a family in the Macleay Valley at the same time.

I have been on the Clare library website but not for some time. So I will visit it again.

    Kind Regards

    Kevin
