Hi my name is Kathy.  I am looking for information on the Madigan's in Limerick.  My 2nd great-grandfather is Thomas Madigan (DOB 1828)  he was born in Ireland and immigrated to Renfrew County in Canada.  There he married Ellen Kennelly.  On his marriage certificate it states his parent as Daniel Madigan and Margaret Downey.  I am assuming they stayed in Ireland not sure.  I have been looking for records of Daniel and Margaret in Limerick with no luck.  Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thank you,  Kathy.

  • Dear Kathy:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

I noted that Daniel Madigan is listed in the Tithe Applotment Books for Limerick in 1825 in the parish of Kildimo.  That might be a good place to start.

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587460/004587460_00325.pdf

The Tithe Applotment Books were a tax that was payable in agricultural produce by occupiers of land to the established Church which was the Church of Ireland.

The records for the parish of Kildimo are located online through the National Library of Ireland.  Unfortunately, the baptism records only start in 1831, but you may find useful information there.

I have also looked at the Roots Ireland database for you under County Limerick and there are a number of Madigan families in the Kildimo area and surrounding parish areas, but none with parents listed as Daniel Madigan and Margaret Downey.  However, you might take a look at the site yourself to see if there is anything helpful for your research.  That site is subscription.

The very best of luck with your research.  If you need further assistance, please let me know.

You might also consider creating an ancestor profile for Daniel Madigan on the XO Chronicles.  That profile will be seen by all of our members and it may assist you with your research if someone has further information.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Kathy

My name is Colleen. I am also looking in to information on my Madigan family that immigrated from Limerick to Renfrew. I have what I am assuming is the same Thomas (DOB 1828) marrying an Ellen Kennelly. I do show his mothers maiden name as Dooley tho. On your tree does it show him having a brother Patrick (wife Mary (Curnan ?) ), then a son named Cornelius Michael Midigan marrying a Catherine Sullivan ?

  • Hi Colleen

It was nice to see your reply.  We are probably relatives.

The only information I have regarding Downey instead of Dooley is the marriage certificate for Thomas Madigan and Ellen Kennelly.  It states Thomas's parents to be Daniel Madigan and Margaret Downey.  I have looked in the ireland records and can not find any information on Daniel and Margaret.  Where did you hear or see a record of the mothers name to be Dooley.  Maybe someone has the marriage certificate wrong and and its Dooley instead Downey not sure?   I asked my dad (Phil) and he does not know.  I do show a brother Patrick.  Are you on ancestory.com.

  • Hi Kathy

For the life of me I can't remember if the Colleen replying above is myself or not (I am going to use my age as an excuse for this HAH)

My paternal grandparents are Cornelius and Catherine. I had managed to find Patrick and Mary (Curnan/Curnane??) but learnning of siblings for him has been new information for me. I am on ancestry under Colleen Madigan if you would like to have a peek at my tree (My Madigan Roots). I am just starting to branch out to the other names on my tree as well.
