I am attaching a screenshot of the only information I have found in Ireland for Daniel McGiven. Could you guide me as to where I could look for information on him? I would love to find out who his parents were. An expert in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah said any last name of McGivern or McGiven in that area would probably be a relative since it is an unusual name for that area. I am new to searching for ancestors. We think he was born in 1791 in Ireland. He died in La Cross, Wisconsin 18 Jan. 1875 and married Eliza Campbell in New York about 1817. My sister went to Ireland to Belfast and the locals there said the McGivens were from North of Belfast in the Balleymena area.

Thank you for any suggestions you have.

Sincerely,

Shauna

P.S. It looks like my screenshot is too large. It basically says: Daniel McGivern Trustee of the Kilmorey Estate Location: County: Down Barony: Mourne Union: Kilkeel Parish: Kilkeel Townland: Greencastle Place Name: Greencastle Place Type: Townland Publication Details: Position of Page: 2 Printing Date: 1863

The Griffiths Valuation for Co. Down which is from around1860 shows 105 McGivern households throughout the county. There is another Daniel McGivern in Kilbroney civil parish. Unfortunately, you can draw any connection from the Daniel McGivern in Kilkeel parish to your Daniel born around 1791. Before contacting the Family History Library, did you know that your ancestor was from Co. Down? Another constraint is there are very few church records back to the late 1700s in Co. Down.

Have you considerd DNA testing? Possibly you will get matches with 4th or 3rd cousins who might have more info on your family origins in Ireland.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Oh, thank you so much! I have done DNA testing for that very reason but I have not been able to connect with more than a few 2nd cousins and they are not through that line. I only know they were from Northern Ireland. My sister went to Ireland and the locals said they were Scotch-Irish sent to live in the north.

Thanks! I noticed in the second line of my reply that I typed can instead of can't but I'm sure you figured that out. All the best with your research!
