Daniel McLaughlin
born 15 Sept 1800 in Kinune, Antrim, Ireland
arrived in Boston, Massachusetts 26 May 1825
married Elizabeth Gurn 19 Feb 1829 in Boston

Are there any records or resources early enough to help me learn more about Daniel and his ancestry? I would also love to learn more about the Kinune area.

Kinune is a townland of 381 acres. In 1861, Griffiths Valuation recorded 12 households there, one of which was occupied by a James McLoughlin. He rented a farmhouse, outbuildings and 20 acres of land (plot 4 on Griffiths Valuation), plus a one quarter share of 272 acres of mountain top (for grazing animals). Presumably that James was a relative of your ancestor.

Here?s the same family in the 1901 census:

    And in 1911:

Here?s someone from that townland who died in 1912. This is the abstract (summary) of his will. The full document is held by PRONI, Belfast but is not on-line yet.

    Full Abstract :

Probate of the Will of Daniel McLaughlin late of Kinune County Antrim Farmer who died 28 April 1912 granted at Belfast to Denis Black Farmer             Effects ?246 16s. 8d

The McLaughlin farm was on the modern Glendun Rd and would be easy enough to find today. It is in a fairly steep glen and went up the side of the hill. It?s a very beautiful area and remains mainly a farming area to this day. Google ?photos of Glendun? and you?ll get to see what it looks like.

  • I just noticed your reponse.  Thank you so much!!  You're right, that is a really beautiful area!  I wonder if he regretted leaving such a pretty place for a city like Boston?!  I just spent some time "touring" the area on Google Maps and it's such a thrill to see the actual location where my ancestor lived.  I can't wait to come visit! Thanks again for your help!
