Hi folks

Can anyone help here.? I am trying to find where my great granddad is buried. I have death certificate which states he died on the 9th Aug 1901 parish register# 04612486.

His wife Mary Dillon (nee Kearney) was still living with her children Mary, Thomas and John in Caherconlish at the time of his death (1901 census). I hope to visit Ireland next year and would love to visit his graveside if possible.

Thanks you   Kev

  • Hi Kev, I went through the headstone inscriptions for Caherconlish on www.historicgraves.ie .

Found no  Dillon.  I would suggest sending query to Limerick Leader newspaper, Will look up their email

address if you would like me to. Its usually free  if you mark it letters to the editor.

  • Hello Kev

I suggested you look up the website historicgraves, com as two graveyards in Caherconlish parish are included ie caherconlish and also Inch Saint Laurence. You can search for the Dillon name or by graveyard name however, both graveyards are not fully transcribed.I looked at both but no Dillon headstone. You could also contact Limerick County Council who may have records of burials in these 2 graveyards. Sometimes a caretaker may have a list and you may get a contact for one from the Council. You should be able to find their contact details on their website.I have a relation living in Caherconlish who is married to a Dillon but I know little of her ancestry but may be able to find out. .Limerick Diocese Genealogy  office should be able to trace all relations to your Grandfather.

I know that as a labourer ,the family may not have been able to afford a headstone and many graves were marked by field stones or a steel cross. but many were also buried in relations plots so it is likely that a headstone does not exist for yur John

Hi Donie sorry only just replying  been a bit busy . I’ve had a look at the grave sites but no luck as yet will try Christine suggestion and try the Limerick leader for info. Will also try your suggestions. I know there were at least two Dillon family’s in Caherconlish . My line is Michael Dillon and Maryanne Murnane 1872 that’s as far back that I can trace. John was their son my great grandfather . As he died when he was only 30 I don’t have much to go on so was hoping I could trace a grave. I still have family in Milford where my Dad was born and have happy memories of my childhood visits there. I was over there in 2015 for a bit of a reunion we are a large family my dad was one of twelve so I have plenty of cousins over and we al keep in touch

Haven’t been able to find a link with the other Caherconlish Dillon family though. Just read your previous post about Murnane so nice to meet you cousin thanks for the info.

Any other info you find would be much appreciated

    Cheers Kev

  • hello kev.

I did a check and found that my relation ,Mary Lewis married a Thomas Dillon from caherconlish on 25.june 1932. Thomas's father was John and in 1911 census his wife mary was head of the househol so that must be your Dillons. My grand aunt Ellen Rainsford married Richard Lewis in 1902 and their daughter was Mary Lewis above.Itis a small world, I must try to contact my Dillon Relation in Caherconlish and may find out about burials.Which Milford have you relations in ? I will get back to you when i get more information

A site you should search is "irishorigins,ie" it is free and all births ,marriages and deaths are availablef ree on that site and it is a goldmine of information.it covers from 1864 onwards.

    Regards
