Hi,

Can anyone decipher the name of the town land that Mary Murphy is from in this civil marriage record to John Fleming in 1871? Roots Ireland transcribes it as Clounreeney, but I cannot locate it on townlands.ie. I am trying to figure out her mother's name...only know that her father is Daniel Murphy. I have all of her children with John.

Thanks!

Carolyn

  • I found this death cert for a Daniel Murphy, he appears to come from the same place and I read it as 'Clounareeney', in the district of Molahiffe, Killarney , County Kerry   ( There is in fact  a place of this name and a poem written called the Land behind the lake

Alas for Clounareeney the land is cheap enough,
But I pity those poor people who live at Ranalough,
They must sell out their cows and land,
    And with their children emigrate,
While there's three pound ten an acre,
For the "land behind the lake."   Taken from the schools collection Ranalough School , Farranfore, Kerry  https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4706352/4705172

  • Thank you Eileen. This could possibly be her father. Interesting that there is a poem about the place, but it does not seem to have reached the town land status!

  • Hi Eileen,

Since you found that death record for Daniel Murphy, I have been working backwards to figure out his wife and children. It appears that his wife was Margaret Kelleher, and they had three children in Clounarooney - Humphrey (1852) and his twin Abigail (1852), and Daniel (1854). I was hoping to find a Mary Murphy as one of their children, but did not. I looked for her over a twenty year period in the RC parish of Killeentierna with a father named Daniel. Mary is the one I am trying to work out on my Ancestry tree. Additionally, aside from Abigail's baptism records, there is no mention of an Abigail in the records for Killeentierna after that. What is your opinion about Abigail being Mary? The names are not similar, but do you suppose she went by Mary later in life? I know this is a difficult question to answer....just thought I'd put it out there.

And regarding the town land of Clounareeney, I am beginning to think it may have had a name change to Ballybeg at some time. I say this because some of Humphrey Murphy's sons have birth records that show both names. For instance, his son Thomas has a record in the Casey Collection that has Clounareeny as the residence, but in the civil records, it shows Ballybeg.

I'd love your thoughts on these two questions.

    Thanks!

  • Eileen,

I forgot to mention one thing....in attempting to "fit" Mary Murphy into this sibling group, I looked at the baptismal sponsors of her nine children with John Fleming.

Their daughter Margaret (1876) had one sponsor named "free" Murphy....possibly short for Humphrey? I did not find any Abigail as a sponsor to one of her children which I

would expect to find if she lived.
