My Grandmother (born 1893 in Tullabeg) attended Derk National School.

Can anyone tell me where the school was?  Is it still there?  Keen to find any info and I wondered if the school records still exist?

    Ann,

I have checked for a national school in County Limerick named "DERK" with negative results.

I suggest that you contact Nicker Primary School in Pallasgreen  - Email: nickerprimaryschool@gmail.com.

Schools are closed at present for Easter holiday and should be open by April 25th.

I attach a copy of  Tullabeg townland.

You should check the 1901 census  - www.nationalarchives.ie/census for a record of your grandmother.

    Regards,

  • Thanks for your reply. My grandmother (from Tullabeg) had written down her life story before she died and in it she mentions that she attended derk National School about 1900. The only reference that I have been able to find to the school is in The Commissioners of Education Annual Report 1853 where they refer to two schools in Pallagreen, Nicker and Derk

I had contacted Nicker School but the Secretary hasn’t come back to me

  • Hello Ann,

I am not sure if this is of any help to you.  The Considine and Heffernan families are associated with Derk, Pallasgreen, Limerick.  The following is taken from the Landed Estates.ie:

William Considine married Mary Heffernan of Derk, county Limerick. ''Burke's Irish Family Records'' states that Heffernan Considine succeeded his maternal uncle William Heffernan of Derk, Pallasgreen, county Limerick in 1808. The O'Dwyers write that William Heffernan (1726-1810) was undertenant to John Parnell for about 1,000 acres in the parish of Emly, county Tipperary, held from the Archbishop of Cashel. Before his death Heffernan became the main tenant. At the time of Griffith's Valuation Heffernan Considine owned an estate in the parishes of Grean and Oola, barony of Coonagh, county Limerick and in the parish of Emly, barony of Clanwilliam, county Tipperary. James Considine held land in the parishes of Cullen, barony of Clanwilliam and Kilcomenty, barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperary. In the 1870s Heffernan Considine owned 950 acres in county Limerick and 1,124 acres in county Tipperary. Sir Heffernan Considine of Derk was High Sheriff of Limerick in 1881 and Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Irish Constabulary.

There may have been a school associated with this.

    Hope it might help!

  • Sorry, I haven't finished my message above. Anyway.. Maybe you have already found something helpful for your need. But, still, I will take a chance to tell you that some time ago, I also had the assignment to write about a school building/life. It was necessary to do research, maybe to look for information in archives. I had never done it before, so I asked Edubirdie to help me. You can read here https://www.aresearchguide.com/edubirdie-review.html an honest review of this service to make sure if it is suitable for you. It is totally legal, don't worry about it. I hope you will get the information (in case you haven't already gotten it). Wish you luck!
