Looking for information on Devlin family prior to emigrating from Ireland.  My great grandfather, Patrick John, was born in Pennfield (now Penfield), NY on July 6, 1892.  He moved to Stratford, Ontario, Canada, when he was 6 and then moved to Vermont as a young man.
I'd like to get info for when he and his family left Ireland and how the arrived.

His parents were Patrick Haney Devlin (Feb 2, 1866) and Agnes Stewart (also used Nancy as first name and Stuart as alternate spelling).  They came from Portglenone, County Antrim.

Hugh Devlin (born btw 1836 and 1838) was married to Mary Heaney from Casheltown.  They apparently settled in Ballylummin.  I have some info on this couple from this site.

Would be grateful for any info available on these family members.  I am fourth generation of this family in US, and have little connection to my heritage.  Thanks much.  -- Lynn

You mention that Agnes was also known as Nancy. That’s normal in Ireland. The two names are interchangeable, like Peggy and Margaret, or Catherine & Kate. Likewise Stewart & Stuart are interchangeable.

Patrick & Agnes don’t appear to have had any children born in Ireland. That points to them emigrating soon after they married. I would expect therefore they emigrated in the 9 or 10 months from May 1887 onwards. There are passenger and naturalisation records on Ancestry and Findmypast. I looked Ancestry records. There are a lot of Patrick Devlins travelling around that time, some on their own. I couldn’t identify your couple with any certainty.

  • Roger,

Well spotted. It’s spelled Develin and I missed that I the indexes. The child was born 31.12.1887. I don’t see any other births in Ireland, so would be inclined to think they left sometime in 1888.

  • Elwyn:

I looked for Devlin births 1887-1888 in the Ballymena registration district and got five records. The Hugh Develin record was the last of the five. Sometimes you get lucky.
