My husband's GG grandfather, Andrew Doherty, was born in the parish of Aughrim, near Ballinasloe, in the 1840's, the son of Martin Doherty and Ann Myles.  They lived in the townland of Cloonameragaun, where Ann is listed a property occupier  in Griffith's Valuation.  Ann emigrated to the United States with at least 4 of her children- Andrew, Michael, Martin, and Thomas.  They settled in Providence, Rhode Island.  Andrew enlisted in the First Rhode Island Cavalry and fought in the civil war.  He married Anne Maguire and lived in Providence for the rest of his life.  Andrew's son Thomas changed the spelling of the surname to Dougherty and that is what is used by the family today.  Hoping to visit the area and find where the land the family once occupied is, and would love to connect with any relatives!

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks again for posting this information on our message boards, there is some great information here that hopefully will help other researching the same family.

I hope that you are able to make a connection to some distant relatives before your visit. It may be an idea to place this message in a more local forum, such as a newsletter or newspaper, in the hope that someone from the area recognises the family and reaches out to you. Here are some places you may possibly be able to do this:

    Galway Advertiser: http://www.advertiser.ie/galway

    Connacht Tribune: http://www.galwaynews.ie/connachttribune

    Galway Independent: http://galwayindependent.com/

I also recommend that you post this message on the Aughrim parish page:

I hope these suggestions are helpful.

    Kind regards,
