My grandparents lived in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland but I know that they had family in Ireland, but I don't know anything more than that.  I know that my grandmother, Sarah visited some cousins in Ireland.  There is no one left to ask about the Irish connection and I would love to know more.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your message.

Do you have any other information at all that you could share? What were your grandparents names, did they have any other children apart from Sarah? Do you know whether your grandparents emigrated to Scotland, or was it someone else in the family? Do you have any documentation, letters, memorabillia that will give you any hints as to where in Ireland Sarah may have visited?

If you run the name Donaghy through the irishtimes surname search engine you can see how many households there were in Ireland during the mid 19th century with that surname. Here is a link to the result:

However, you can see from these results that, although there were alot in Tyrone, the name is very spread out across Ireland. You also have to take into consideration that any family in Ireland may be using differant variations on the names.

Here are some websites which may help and give you some ideas of where to start your search:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

The National Archives Scotland- family history: http://www.nas.gov.uk/familyHistory/

    Family Search: https://familysearch.org/

I hope that you can find some piece of information that will give you some clues as to where you can look. The main thing is to find a location in Ireland- - if you can find this - things will open up and you will then be able to search further.

Remember to post any new information that you may find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
