Hi there,

I have record of irish ancestors living in Cardiff from 1851, Jeremiah Donovan and Margaret Crimmin, but all it says in place of origin is Ireland, we have fathers names from their marriage cert. And estimated births but not much else to go off for going further back. Do you have any advice of how we can find out from where in Ireland they came from!
Going from local cardiff history of the large Irish community that came here, the probability is Cork or Munster area (a place also flagging up in my DNA) but really arent sure how to confirm and find out exactly where they were from or to find out the whereabouts of their fathers perhaps.

Many thanks!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

90% of Donovans in the mid-19th century were in Co. Cork so your assumption is on target. Also, Crimmin is a strong Co. Cork surname. My wife's maiden name is Cremen (originally Crimmin) and her family came from Cork city to America around 1850.

The RC records for Co. Cork are split. The records for parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross are on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie  and for parishes in the Diocese of Cloyne, the records are on the subscription site Roots Ireland. I checked on both sites and did not see a marriage record for Jeremiah and Margaret.

You can share the father's names with me and I will look for records but there are many Jeremiah Donovans and Margaret Crimmin is a fairly common name. If you have mother's maiden name that would be very helpful.

  • Hi Roger,

Ah, great to know I am on the right track. That is really useful, I have read that there are many variations of the Crimmin name.

So Jeremiah is listed as a 17-year-old from Ireland living as a Lodger in Cardiff on the 1851 census. Then we have his marriage certificate to Maragaret Crimmin in 1858, Cardiff, also listed as being from Ireland.

Jeremiahs estimated birth is 1834 and Margaret's is approx 1837

I am familiar with Irish Geneology but not with Roots so I will check that out, thanks.

Their father's name on the marriage certificate are John Donovan and Jeremiah Crimmin (listed as deceased), but this is the only information we have regarding their parents. There is no record of a death of a Jeremiah Crimmin in Cardiff from these times so my assumption is that he would have died in Ireland prior to Margaret's departure. There is also no Maragaret Crimmin on a census prior to her marriage in 1858 and the 1961 census in Cardiff where she is living with Jeremiah Donovan and their children.

I wish I had a clue of their mothers maiden names but so far I have no hints!

    I appreciate the help,

    many thanks,

I searched for Margaret Crimmin baptismal records with father Jeremiah and found three possibilities. The first was on www.irishgenealogy.ie and the other two on the subscription site Roots Ireland. However, two records were in 1832 and the other in 1831.

I will look for Jeremiah Donovan and get back to you.

Three Jeremiah Donovan baptismal records father John on Roots Ireland all in Youghal. There were eight on www.irishgenealogy.ie from 1830-1834. Too many to cut and paste but the site is free and you can make a search and see the records.
