We have information showing that my grandfather, John Francis Higgins was born in Westport, Mayo Ireland in 1848, died in Wessington, Beadle, SD, USA in 1928. We have seen geneology showing that his father's name was Michael Egan?, Queens, Ireland. Some records we have seen shows Egan was married several times but dates don't make sense and we have not been able to confirm.
Why would John Francis' fathers' name be Egan.
Can anyone tell me if Egan became Higgins?
