Hi,
will ask some of the volunteers in Birr if they can help.
Do you have any more information - was/is Backlands a street? What time period are we talking about?
regards

"I have heard of Backlands and believe it was a small 'village' out the Croghan Road direction. Nothing really exists of it now. There were cottages and I was speaking to a local man recently who remembers playing in the semi ruined cottages in the 1960's. They may have been on Lord Rosse's land. I haven't been there but I believe you followed the river from Croghan Bridge towards Banagher. Maybe search the 1911 census?Sorry I can't be of more help. The Parish Office of St. Brendan's Catholic Church has an index to births etc. and is open a few mornings a week. They are extremely helpful and welcoming."

Thanks a million
I thought Backlands was near Five Valley near Kilcormac/Birr area but have had no luck. Or maybe Rath but can find nothing the the Census either 1901 or 1911

Well, actually in the meantime another volunteer has written:
"I see Dooleys of Backlands which is also an area around Rath but I want to check it out and I know Dooleys in that area. I did not know there was an area called Backlands on the Croghan Road in Birr."
So sounds like there are TWO!
This volunteer will be registered soon and hopefully can fill you in with more information.
