I have found some notes of mine - 1845 Patrick King and Bridget Doonan Outerach Co Leitrim I am assuming this was a marriage - can you tell me where this place is and where I may find more information? The subscription site Roots Ireland shows a January 30 1845 marriage record for a Patrick King and Bridget Doonan in Outeragh RC parish.

Oughteragh parish is in central Leitrim on the border with Co. Cavan.

There is a March 11 1846 baptismal record for a Mary King with Patrick and Bridget as parents and a May 9 1848 baptismal record for an Anne King same parents no witnesses shown on either record.

Did the family emigrate? I do see Patrick King records in the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing in Oughteragh civil parish.

  • Oh my goodness- you are amazing - there has been such a tangle of surnames !
I find Bridget with a Hugh Moran in Hull- 1861 census- they have these 2 King girls. I cannot find a marriage for Bridget and  Hugh. They have 4 Moran children. According to the census the King girls were born in Ireland, and explains the King surname!!!

  • Thank you so much for the information and location of Oughteragh. Can you please give me the Labels for this area- County - Leitrim Parish - Oughteragh- and what else ? Also where would you advise me to look - can I find a death for Patrick King ? I know Bridget was in England before 1858. Is it possible to find the Doonan family? This is all new to me and I am so very grateful for your help. Christine Herbert

Civil registation of deaths started in 1864. Prior to that date some churches retained death info but Oughteragh parish did not.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Oughteragh civil parish shows a Patrick King in Curraghnabania townland. Don't know if this record is for your Patrick or not. If he died lets say 1850, the record would be for a different Patrick but if he died around 1857, it could be his record.

The townland could be Curraghnabania, civil parish Oughteragh Co. Leitrim.

I looked for Doonan records in the Griffiths and there were 14 Doonan households but none in Oughteragh parish so it would be difficult to figure where Bridget came from. The marriage normally occurred in the bride's parish so maybe her father had a very small holding and was not listed in the Griffiths.

    Questions?

  • Dear Roger - thank you so much ! We have some confusion with Bridget's surname - her daughter's death certificate lists Nelson, her records in Hull use King. The use of Doonan on her daughter's baptism was my first proof of Doonan. Would there be records of Nelson's in the area ? She ends up in Yorkshire before 1857. Would the poverty have driven her to leave with the 2 little girls ? What was it like? Thanks

I checked the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing. There were four Nelson records so not very common. Two were in Drumlease civil parish and the other two in Killanummery civil parish. Both of those parishes are further to the north and west of Oughteragh parish.
