THE DREW-COATES CONNECTION:
In Nick Reddan's Newpaper extracts part 10, there is a record of the wedding of Jane Drew, Daughter of John Drew Coates esq, on the 16 Aug 1839, to Benjamin Bowen BRERETON, with a reference to Samuel Coates marrying a Jane DREW in Killaloe, Co Clare, in 1783. ( John's parents?)
Did Samuel and Jane move down to Eyrecourt and become farmers? Given a nominal age of 21 when they married, they would have been 61 around the time of Pigot's Directory in 1824, and 83 around the time of Slater's Directory of Ireland in 1846.
John Drew Coates may have been a sectretary to the Grand Jury of Cork..more investigation needed.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your message and for sharing this information on the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
Have you tried looking for Samuel and Jane in the Tithe Applotment Books? These are land records that were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland (the main Protestant church, and the church established by the state until its dis-establishment in 1871). There is a manuscript book for almost every parish, giving the names of occupiers, the amount of land held, and the sums to be paid in tithes.
You can search these records online at: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
There is a later land record called Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) also available online at:
