My 2nd great grandfather, Edmund Carroll was born in Limerick about 1804. The name of his parents is uncertain. His wife was Christine Quinlan. He immigrated to the United States in 1849 with his family. The ship's manifest gives their names and ages. The ages have varied for the various members of the family in different documents in the U.S. Using the ship's manifest the names and years of birth are: Edmund b. 1804, Christine b. 1809, Patrick b. 1831, John b. 1833, Michael b. 1835, Mary b. 1835, and James b. 1839. Their ship, the Cato, sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans and the family finally settled in Bunker Hill, Macoupin County, Illinois and in St. Louis, Missouri. I am looking for information

Found a possible marriage which at least gives a starting location - the marriage is between Edmund Carroll and Catherine Quinlan on the 22nd February in Hospital (aka Hospital and Herbertstown) Catholic parish in County Limerick. The groom is noted as resident in Effin parish which is located a few parishes to the south west of Hospital parish. The bride's residence is noted as 'Lough'. The town of Hospital is in the civil parish of the same name and is located abt 30km (~19 miles) south-south east of Limerick city.

see this page in the NLI register - the page is upside down, and there are notes from a later priest about rebinding an older "mutilated" register, so possibly some pages are missing.

I've attached a rotated version of the image below.

    Shanew147,

Thank you for this information. I really appreciate your help. It has always bee puzzling to me that an entire family picks up their lives and emigrates and little information can be found of their lives in Ireland. Possibly, 7 people in one family and three cousins came over on the ship and it is a struggle to find even a little bit of their lives before 1849.

    Thank you again,
