Edward and Priscilla McCartney of Tallastown, County Louth

Hi Lisa, I have been looking at various online stuff and my own copy of a catholic census for Tallenstown in 1837, there are a number of McCartneys but no Edward, there is a Widow McCartney living alone, the townland is Charlestown, there is no Edward listed in the Tithes either, this does not mean he was not there just he was not a holder of land over an acre or did not pay the tithes.

However I have looked at the marriage register, free online and the information does not give the parents  names. only their name and the witnesses. You can see it here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0234 I have attached a snip.

I can find no other baptisms for a McCartney with a father Edward in Ireland from 1815 to 1825 and the name Priscilla would be very unusual at that time , however I see it as a sponsor on one of the baptisms. There are also a few in the Louth website below, 

I can see the names you mention like Winters and Campbell in the area. 

Records for Tallenstown baptisms only commence in 1817 and there is a 5 years gap from 1825 to 1830, marriages commence in 1804, I can see no record for an Edward getting married in Louth, Armagh, Meath and Monaghan,  this may mean he got married in a church that does not have records at that remove. 

Where did you get the information on her parents, there are a few Mary McCartney's born in Tallenstown but the one with the best date, Mary McCartney baptised 1st April 1818, to a Pat and and Anne Rowe or Roe, this would make her only 19 at marriage. If you have a death age it may assist but these are often guesses but the survivors. 

There is a site on Louth here which lists many McCartney including some graveyards http://www.jbhall.clahs.ie/ there is also a Louth Genealogy FB page, apply to join, not overly busy. I see a little McCartney discussion on it.

So I followed my great grandfather up to his father Bernard CAMPBELL and the family always said her name was Mary Jane McCARTNEY, and it turns out they were right. They also said her mother was Priscilla WINTERS.

So, I've confirmed the name Mary McCartney and found she is from County Louth from her tombstone, which led me to Bernard Jr's baptism, so Tallanstown County Louth is confirmed. Two things confirmed.

Now for her parents. Looking at Bernard Jr's baptism, when it said Mary McCartney OF EDWARD AND PRISCILLA (WINTERS?), I thought that phrase meant they were Mary McCARTNEY's  parents. Are you telling me they were sponsors? Is that like godparents?

I may switch gears and see if I can find Bernard CAMPBELL's family in Tallanstown as one of the witnesses at his marriage was Owen CAMPBELL, and we know Bernard lived there thru having 4 kids, so maybe that is the family from Tallanstown, the CAMPBELLs, and it will lead me to the McCARTNEYs from who knows where.

Thanks again for so much info. I was looking at pics of Tallanstown and its really pretty. Also, I love towns that win the Tidy Town award, I couldn't believe a town my ancestors are from won one.

Lisa, I have been rooting around various sites to see if I could find anything concrete to little effect, the census of 1837 can be viewed on the J Stor website which is minimal subscription but I understand you can view some articles for free to get you started, it is in the 1957 journal of the County Louth Archaeological and History Society.

I used Roots Ireland to look at all marraiges from 1830 to 1860 for a Priscilla McCartney to no avail, assuming your ancestor was not an only child I thought some of the Tallenstown marriages may be siblings especially sisters at any brothers would marry in the brides parish, see where I mentioned a Mary McCartney mother Rowe, well also see another marriage of a male Rowe to a McCartney, and a Campbell married another McCartney also, not in Tallenstown if memory is correct, there is a marriage of a McCartney to a Halfpenny or Halpenny which is a name in the area and unusual if you can see if there is one in your matches on DNA.

There is no mention of Campbells or McCartney in Griffiths Valuation in the mid 1850s, in Tallanstown or Tallenstown not could I see any there in the Tithes.

There is a story (true) on the County Louth website I sent you called the Wildgoose Lodge Murders, Netflix made a film locally about 7 or  years ago if you want to have a look, not a nice story.

The area is still rural and probably not much changed except the quality of roads and housing etc has improved a lot.

Just knowing there is a Louth Archeology and History Society is goid news. A 1837 census would be ideal. I'll check it out, thanks!

So I have to watch a scary movie to see the area of Louth. I dislike scary movies immensely, but it may be worth it to see the Louth countryside. Thanks for the tip!
