Looking for any information on an Edward Sweeney, born in Moangarriff, Kilgrant Parish, between

1817 and 1820.  He marriage Honora O'Shea in 17 November 1856 at the St Paul (Minnesota)

Cathedral.  That is all I know about him!  Their first son was named Michael, second son Timothy

and third son John.  First daughter was named Margaret and the second daughter Catherine.  Any

help would be appreciated.  Audrey L, St Paul, Minnesota

  • Hi Audrey,

There is a record of the baptism of Edward Sweeney in Tipperary 1823 on www.rootsireland.ie/

It costs to view the record but will give you the parents' names.

There were no Moangariff or Kilgrant parishes in the list of options in Tipperary North; the parish of this record is Templemore.

Two public member trees on ancestry.com (Corniea and Constance Sweeney) have Honora as Hannah born 1830 in Ireland & that they had 11 children: Margaret 1857 Michael 1858Timothy 1861 John 1862 John 1863 Edward 1863 Catherine 1865 Edward 1867 Patrick 1869 William 1870 Joseph.1872

They lived in West St Paul Minnesota

You might want to have a look at the Tithe Applotments which are free to search online - there are 38 Sweeneys in Tipperary (1823-36)

  • Hi Audrey

Moangarriff is a townland within the town boundary of Clonmel ( near Clonmel Powerstown race course in old civil parish Kilgrant) in South Tipperary . No Sweeney record in 1830 Tithe Applotments ( over 1 acre rented) or 1851 Griffith Valuation ( 4 families lived there)

  • Thanks, Col.  The youngest son, Joseph, was my grandfather.  His mother used Hannah for many records, but the Cathedral of St Paul marriage record shows her first name as Honora.  Unfortunately, we can't figure out where she came from, even though the Priest wrote it in the record!  Corneia is a cousin, his grandmother was my Dad's cousin. He got his information from me, although he didn't copy the birth dates correctly.  Correct birth dates are:  Margaret - 1857, Michael - 1858, Timothy - 1860, John - 1862, Catherine - 1863, Edward - 1865, Patrick - 1867 (died before 1875), William - 1869 and Joseph - 1872.  Dates from the baptism records of the Cathedral. Haven't figure out who the Constance is, yet!

  • Thanks, Seamus, for that information.  I'll start checking in Clonmel, in case records are listed under the current civil parish!
