James Eganm married Letitia Murray in Eglish in 1846 according to my records. Their first daughter Margaret was said to have been born in "Queens" Ireland around 1849. I have found no record for her. The family then moved to the US in 1850. I have records of the family in the US but would like to find where the Egans and Murrays came from in Ireland and if their are still family there. I believe there may have been another relative that lived in New York.

  • Hi there,

The "Queen's" you mention, is probably Queen's County (the old name for County Laois). Eglish, County Laois is in the parish called Rathsaran. This will be created shortly and you can then post the message there. In the meantime you can post it on the County Laois page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-laois

The Roman Catholic church records for Rathdowney (Rathsaran) date from 1763 for baptismal records and 1769 for marriage records. These are available at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 5013, 5014. If you have any difficulty, write to the parish priest for more assistance.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • I have since found the baptismal record of Margaret Egan in the Birr Loughkeen records, the kilaole diocese. I am not sure where that is.
