Hi, I would like to find out information about Elizabeth Flanagan, my Great Great Great Grandmother who was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1857. She arrived on the ship "Highflyer" in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia in 1878 aged 21. I would like to know why she left & any information about her family. Thankyou. Virginia

The subscription site Roots ireland has a December 10 1857 baptismal record for an Elizabeth Flanigan father Edward Flanigan mother Johanna Grenshall. The RC parish was Dunnamaggan. There were also four likely older siblings Michael January 24 1844 and Mary March 2 1845 Catherine August 14 1848 Edmund May 28 1853. Four all four records the mother was Judith Grinsell. Judith was a variant of Johanna. I did not locate a marriage record. This family lived in Caherlesk townland in Ballytobin civil parish.

I don't know if the 1857 record is for your ancestor without more confirming evidence. She likely left Ireland for a better opportunity. Possibly she had relatives already in Australia.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hi Roger,
Thank you very much for your reply.
Since I sent that message I was given Elizabeth Flanagan's death certificate.
It states that her mother was Johannah Greenwich & her Dad Joseph Flanagan - a farmer. Are you able to provide any further information from that?
    Kind Regards
    Virginia
