I am trying to find any information about Elizabeth Haughton. Her parents were John Haughton (a clerk) and Elizabeth Maloney. She married James Flavelle 27 Feb 1857 in Dublin and emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the "Empress Queen" She died 20 July 1902 in New South Wales, Australia. Did she have any siblings? Where exactly was she born?  Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you - Merrilyn Schlipalius

  • Here’s the 1857 marriage.  James Flavelle was an accountant, and so also was Elizabeth’s father John, so that may explain how they met. A business connection between the two families perhaps? Doesn’t tell you where in Mayo she came from though.

Dublin Evening Post for 15th May 1827 has an advert for a set of Mercantile Tables (used for calculating weights, multiplication etc) created by John Houghton, Accountant, Liverpool. Perhaps some connection or maybe just a coincidence? I don’t see any other reference to JH Accountant in the newspapers.

  • Merrilyn,

Do you have evidence showing she was born in Mayo?  It might be helpful to the search.

    Thanks.

  • Thank you Elwyn for your information - that's interesting about both James and his father in law being accountants.  Patricia, the only evidence I have that Elizabeth was born in County Mayo comes from the NSW Death Registration Transcription . The informant was her son George Flavelle.      Thank you both. - Merrilyn
