My husband's great grandmother - Eliza or Elizabeth Maguire or McGuire - was born in County Leitrim in 1849 but I would love to know more!

Her parents were John Maguire, a farmer, and Annie Reilly. Elizabeth came to Melbourne on the ship Charlotte Gladstone from Plymouth in Sept 1869, arriving here on christmas Eve!

She married Richard Taylor in Melbourne on Sept 5 1872 and had 4 children. She died of heart disease on Nov 17 1904 and is buried at Williamstown Cemetery.

Sadly there is no other information available about her! She was recorded as both Eliza and Elizabeth - and her surname was spelt both ways!! I would like to know more details about her life in ireland and her family there.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions - Thank you...Margot Eklund

  • Hello Margot and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

Few questions - have you any records about Elizabeth or her parents in Ireland also do you have her ships record

I have looked at the Griffith Valuations for Leitrim (showing land owners in each county) Leitrim was surveyed about 1856.  Attached below are the records for all the John Maguire and McGuire who own land at that time in Leitrim.

The problem is they dont show any family members

Margot has your husband done DNA do you mind me asking, this might help with narrowing down relatives also

  • Hi Geraldine - Thank you for your reply. Yes -  I have that shipping record for Eliza Maguire but it only has minimal information! I have her marriage certificate which names her parents and Leitrim as her birthplace. Her children's birth certificates and her death cert use a mix of Eliza and Elizabeth. I have no idetails at all of any other family [either in Ireland or in Australia!]  I will work my way through those Griffiths Valuations - thank you. It gives me parish names which I did not know.  I am sorry that I can't give you more details. - or be more specific!

We had not considered DNA testing but that may be an answer. Thank you for your help - Margot

  • Hi Geraldine -

On her marriage certificate Eliza/Elizabeth listed her parents as John Maguire and Annie Reilly, and that she came from County Leitrim. Her father was a farmer.

Roger sent me the Griffiths Valuations  lists showing 20 odd Maguire/McGuires in Leitrim. Unfortunately I do not know anything else - no idea which parish or town they came from. I have started going through those - not easy!

Her death cert mentions the same names, but the newspaper obit asks that Irish and American papers please copy - so there were links still there, She was born in 1849 and died in Melbourne in 1904.

I am sorry I have nothing further to help nail this down!!

Thank you for your help - Margot
